This is true even if you accrue vacation in most states.

you put it on the shared calendar so others know you're gone.

I don't have unlimited PTO, I get 4.61 hours per pay period, but my company is sort of similar to yours. My boss has to approve time off, he's never told me no, and then just asks that we send out a Outlook meeting to everyone internal saying we are off so that people know not to expect a response from you and to plan accordingly.

We don't have to take off for doctors appointments or meetings. I go to phototherapy twice per week and asked my boss if I need to use hours, he said no you don't even need to tell anyone you are leaving for a doctors appointment. Very opposite of my last job who wanted to know where I was, when, and why I was off. Friday I worked about an hour, and took no time off. It was just a slow day. But since I'm not in an office can just do whatever I want.

We are very much a just get your work done company. It also helps that my bosses are similar aged to me and very active with outdoor activities, so they tend to not want to work Friday afternoons either.

I think more companies should take the get your work done mentality instead of tracking every second of your time in and out of the office.

Typically the employee takes less time off with unlimited Vacation (never heard of unlimited PTO), and the company doesn't end up paying out for leftover time accrued when an employee leaves. Good deal for the company.

this. I have wasted so much of my life (pre covid) goofing off at work because there was no work to be done but it was the old school arse in seat mentality.

Who said he didn't get his work done? You're making a big assumption while wasting time in the middle of a workday yourself. fricking hilarious you accuse me of making assumptions though

My old company switched to it. I think as long as your get your work done, it's not an issue.

If you are getting offered that then there are definitely gonna be head aches that come with it.

I have never had Unlimited PTO. Sounds like a bad idea and I wouldn't be taking much anyways. My last job you got two weeks tops and it didn't roll. No sick time either. That place blew goats. Where I am now in government is awesome

10 Paid Holidays and 160 hours PTO per year up to year 3. Then it jumps to 200 hours. Then 224 at year 10 and finally 256 at 20 years. It carries over up to 320 I think.

Everyone seems to stack it until its maxed and then they are forced to take their accrual every year.

I don't have unlimited PTO, but my company making everything one bucket to use a few years ago, where there's no difference b/t sick time and PTO. But for the Management level that I'm on, you can't roll over or cash out your balance, but lose it if you don't use it.

The first year we did this there was a huge issue with basically every leader taking off August and September bc everyone had a ton of hours leftover, but we're in year 3 of it and everyone seems to like it and have started spreading out their PTO better.

As long as you're not sick all the time, this method is pretty cool. I plan 2-4 day trips all the time in 'offseasons' now and travel way more bc of it, while still only having 3 day work weeks the month of september basically

Got an offer a few years ago for a company that gave unlimited PTO.

It sounds nice but while you're getting paid salary to be off, nobody is going to do the work for you while you're out, and if you make any sort of profit sharing or commission, it all goes away.

Good point and this is probably how it all got started.

This is how it starts. My previous employer did this and my reaction was they were dressing up the balance sheet to sell the company. About a year later we were sold.

This was pre-covid. What I found then was the overhead positions at work like legal, hr, accounting, marketing got to take full advantage of it. The R&D, service and sales team took less time off.

Its an end around for businesses to avoid having to decide between allowing PTO to rollover and/or be bought back
They can still decline your request for PTO, this only allows you the right to ask as much as you want

Never heard about unlimited PTO. Seems like a good way to screw you over and a scam. Find a new company

I have unlimited PTO and I take off more time than I would if I had a PTO bank. It helped out a lot the past couple years since I'm in the age range where all of my friends are getting married. Lots of Thursdays and Fridays taken off with no questions asked. Luckily my boss is cool with it as long as I get my job done.

I really wish this was the mindset for employers as long as the work allows for it. Hire me to accomplish goals, not sit in the office 40 hours a week if it isn't necessary. I've got a good number of projects currently, but the nature of them doesn't really necessitate sitting at my desk 9-5. But here I am because management believes in butts in seats.

Couldn't work for all industries of course.
