I will say..
On the flip side, there are many roles whose value in is physically being present. If someone is the receptionist whose job is to greet people/direct people that come in and do misc. office tasks, their value is the time their butt is in the seat. Same for many admin assistants, office managers, etc. -- especially in companies that are still forced to work with hard paperwork and things aren't able to be digitized.
You'd be surprised how many people on Reddit in those sorts of roles that can't understand why their mean boss won't let them WFH Your whole job is to manage the physical office... ya kinda gotta be there.
There are people out there who have a job and an income purely because some old schooler thinks they need to have an assistant, receptionist, etc. when they really don't have nearly enough work for that person to do. We eliminate this, and we are eliminating jobs for a whole group of people. Whether that is a good or bad thing, I don't know.
On the small scale, I think these jobs should be eliminated since they're wasteful. Large scale, do we want to become so efficient that we have people jobless because we no longer need them?

quote:I think those roles will always exist in some form because it would be a waste of time for the high earner they work for to do all the menial stuff they do. The high earner is certainly capable of doing the additional work, but their time is certainly better spent focusing on the big stuff.

Our department has one admin assistant for all of us (less than 15 people total). That position is primarily for our dept head, but we all have access. I don't ever see a point where eliminating that position would really be a benefit.

Yes, for most people it is a bad deal.
When my company switched they hyped it up as a great thing. When really it was an accounting trick to wipe a ton of liabilities off the books in order to make us look more attractive to purchase.

They say it is unlimited.
But if you take advantage of it, you will have unlimited free time on your hands after they fire you.

I feel like unlimited is good if you’re the type of employee who can get your work done by Wednesday or Thursday morning and take a day or 2 off every week
Otherwise it sucks

I don't have PTO. But I also only have to be there about 10 hours per week as long as my work is getting done.

Yes, it’s one of the dumber ideas. Sounds great until you settle in and feel guilty taking off when your dept. is swamped etc.
Studies have actually been done and show people take less PTO with unlimited. Hence why companies are latching on to it as an “incentive.”

Can you link the studies? I'm pretty sure other studies have found the opposite and that it is largely dependent on industry, individual company norms, job level, etc.

Currently I get 160 hours a year and can carry over all of it. My boss started last year and despises paying out PTO when employees leave. He’s pushing hard for unlimited PTO. Obviously they’re pushing it as a great benefit when in reality it’s not for most employees. My wife only gets a week of PTO so because of that I don’t take enough time off for unlimited PTO to be beneficial. If they do implement it I’ll make sure that I take more than 160 hours even if I just sit at home playing PlayStation.

Yes unlimited pto sounds like a bad idea. You feel guilty for taking off and all of your coworkers are definitely keeping track of who is in and who isn’t. Wow that sounds like a cluster frick

Everyone would take PTO the Monday after the Super Bowl
