Whitening your skin is huge in Thailand via a bunch of different means. You'll see the advertisements as you soon as you land in Bangkok.
As with a lot of those countries, being "white" is a sign of wealth. Being dark or tan is bad. Being white means you work in an office and make money, not out in the sun in the fields and poor.
