Similar situation with us, my wife grew up in Lake Chuck, I've been here 20 yrs. The opportunity came up to make the move to Hou. It's really working out well. Go for it!

This is how I feel about my hometown. Moving back to my hometown after college was the last thing I wanted to do. Didn't even really want to stay in Alabama. Has nothing to do with my hometown or Alabama, just wanted to experience different places while I'm still young. The difficult part now is leaving a job I enjoy and am successful in. Definitely not planning on leaving for at least a few years.

I left BR for college in Fort Worth. One of the best decisions my young self ever made. It's worth every bit of the growing pains to experience living in a different city for the first time in your life.

Well I never hated BR, per se. I only changed my opinion about it when I lived elsewhere and had someplace to compare with it.

Our son is special needs, so there's no way we'd have been able to survive in another place without the help & support of our family.

Grew up in Br and moved to Tampa for work. Never wanted to leave and once there never wanted to come back to Br.

I grew up outside Baton Rouge, but I've lived in Atlanta, Tampa, and Houston at times.
I left the region for good after I went to LSU. I miss BR and south Louisiana every day...particularly the food, LSU, and my friends. My wife and I met in Baton Rouge and we still have friends and family in the region. We keep saying that we'll return to Baton Rouge, but the opportunity has never presented itself. We are impressed with the progress made in the city every time we visit.
I've lived here in the Memphis suburbs for over 4 years now. My house here is on the market and we've just bought a new home outside Pittsburgh because of an opportunity that we could not pass up. I'll probably miss some things about the Memphis area when I move in July. I'm not sure how I'll deal with the winters in western PA.
Sometimes I think that I've changed to the point where I would be considered an outsider in southern Louisiana. The reality is that southern Louisiana is very unique. Nothing else I've experienced is quite like it....but professional opportunities in my field are just superior elsewhere.

Give it a shot. A lot of people in south Louisiana seem so unwilling to move away even for a summer internship. They are robbing themselves of a unique perspective.
We left Baton Rouge for a few years, but we returned. It's worth experiencing life outside of your hometown.
You will learn to appreciate some things about Baton Rouge after you leave, and you'll learn to appreciate things about your new town.
Do it now. It will only get more difficult as you get older. Barring some catastrophic hurricane, Baton Rouge, your friends, and LSU will be here if you decide to return.

ETA: I did it for several years. I enjoyed it and frankly didn't want to come back but I made my mark, and my money here and I know what this city has and can be and I believe really for the first time in my life that Baton Rouge (and the whole metropolitan region ) is on the cusp of really good growth. It has problems, education within EBR Parish being first and foremost but I consider Ascension, Livingston, Feliciana's and WBR part of the region so it has good pockets.
But those Rocky Mountains for several years were splendid as a young man.

I regret not moving away before kids. We were close to moving to Seattle, but then my wife got pregnant as we were planning the move. Probably won't ever move farther away than a few hours now.

The ones we're interested in are: Denver, Portland, New York, Raleigh NC, Charleston SC, Greenville, SC, Boston, Providence
But I can't just pick one and ask to go there specifically. It's going to be a question of which one has an opening that would be a decent fit for me.

I say do it. I was close a few years ago. I got laid off from a mortgage company while my wife was still job hunting after college. If she wouldn't have accepted a job the week later we would have happily packed up our stuff and tried a new city.
