Why? If they are financially smart, keeping the old car and renting as needed provides for much more financial freedom. Buying a new car is never the good financial choice. It is an emotional choice to make you feel good, nothing more.

I’m not saying buy a new car.

The one they have cannot be fixed?

On a few occasions I’ve delayed insurance covered car repairs so we could get the car fixed and use the rent car to go on vacation.

You buy a car to use, therefore you put miles on it.

Your math says driving 100k miles
Depreciates it by $25k- not true.

If I have a $35k accord, it’s worth more than $10k after 100k miles.

Go check prices on used trucks…

Spit that BS to someone else

But yea, if someone just can't afford a new car and that's their reason for renting, then spending money on vacation AND a rental seems somewhat fiscally irresponsible.

That's a stretch.

He's right, you're wrong. Look at the IRS mileage allowance of $0.70/mile, which has far more research than your simple anecdote behind it.

I've known people who buy and drive a huge vehicle so when they travel they can fit the entire family and maybe an extra friend or two, but don't ever have a full vehicle in their everyday life. They are better renting for their one or two vacations a year and driving they enjoy better the other 50 weeks a year.

Bet you payed more to rent the car, therefore was not worth it.

You are associating this endeavor with playing the stock market. Its not like he was making an investment.

My friends own dealerships. I got a full size van. Brought a bunch. Had a great time. Spent time in Ga. then came down to Florida, then back to BTR.
Worth every penny.

IRS mileage deduction and depreciation has nothing to do with each other buddy.

Do the math… makes no sense.

Again… a car with 50,000 miles does not automatically depreciate $35k. That’s just dumb thinking.

Are you forgetting tires, oil changes, maintenance and repairs?

My mother drives a POS ford focus as a company vehicle. It’s free so she doesn’t complain but it’s probably 8-9 years old and a shitbox that is too small to be safe. So when she takes the grandkids on vacation and my dad isn’t going along she rents a bigger car.

We rented a van for a vacation a few years ago. We were taking my uncle who always has a lot of luggage and my dad's walker takes up a good amount of room as well

We rented a van and drove cross country to take my son to WrestleMania in LA and flew home. Greatest vacation ever.

Depreciation is part of TCO. The original discussion was around how much per mile it costs to operate your personal car vs how much a rental costs. The point stands. Buddy.
