Round trip in a 17mpg 93 octane or round trip in a 40mpg 89 octane on a 1500 mile trip.
1500 round trip you may break even
1500 one way and you’re saving about $150

I have two vehicles. My daily driver is 225,000 miles and is still crushing. My truck is a pos.
I rent when we travel 5+ hours. Working out good for me

I rent when I go on a trip to keep from putting the miles and wear and tear on my car.

Going to Destin twice but doesn’t have a reliable vehicle to get there? Priorities I guess
Agreed. Perhaps they don’t have a far commute and the vehicles are suited for that. But not long drives. And the kids want/deserve a vacation. And they are prioritizing the happiness of kids.
Priorities I guess. Agreed.

I rent to go to beach. Not getting sand in my vehicles

I have a friend who does this. He says he doesn't want miles on his car because of depreciation. But what he's paying for the rental is more than what the mileage depreciation would be on his personal vehicle; it makes no sense. And get this- he's a logistics director at a mid-size pharma, and still doesn't get it. Some people just get an idea in their head and that's it, you can't talk them out of it with any amount of reason or logic.

Simplifies the situation if you ever have a breakdown. I also rent on long roadtrips.

This. And I haven't had a car payment since 2019. I think the roughly $1200/year in rental costs are keeping me far ahead of the game.
Now, can I prove my car wouldn't have lasted this long either way? I guess not. But as I said. It's working out for my family.

If you are black and renting a charger to go to Atlanta or Houston for the weekend it appears to be a good idea

TCO on your personal car is now estimated at $0.70/mile for your personal vehicle by the IRS. That encompasses everything - fuel, tires, brakes, depreciation due to miles, insurance, etc. This week, I have a rental for 3 days, we will drive around 600 miles. That would be $420. My rental, all-in, including fuel, will be <$300. My own auto insurance covers me, so no incremental cost there. Amazing no one on this thread has considered TCO.

Always amazes me how some get so bent out of shape over things other people do.
I’ve rented cars a few times for long trips, let the rental car company eat the mileage and wear/tear. It adds up quick taking a road trip from Charleston to the Keys (1600 mile+ round trip.
I was in a rental coming back from the Keys, guess I hit road debris and blew out a tire. It was their issue, not mine
And Murphy’s Law, if the car breaks down 600 miles from home, I can call and get a replacement instead of trying to figure out where to get mine towed/repaired on a Saturday evening.

We rented a Suburban one time. But we were staying for 17 days and my wife thought she needed to pack the entire house. It ended up being great for the extra space, but realistically, we could have done it cheaper taking her Traverse and my truck. But the extra space was nice and we made good time since I was the only one doing the driving.

First of, I agree.
But I truly believe threads like this are completely fabricated based on a Reddit/internet topic so OP can get a long thread. A 4-5 page thread on their topic means so much to people these days.
And yes, I realize I contributed to their success.

We rented a big van one time to take on vacation because we wanted more space
We did the same thing. We had 10 in a passenger van and drove to Orlando. Plenty of room and only one vehicle to park.

renting for a few days is a lot cheaper than a new vehicle.
Yeah but the point is maybe it’s time to take a year off from vacation and get your stuff in order.

What does mainlining a little Mexican speedball have to do with renting a car?

Both are fun for a little while?

So you saved about 65 gallons. Say gas was $4/ gal… you saved $260.
You do realize that gas is way less than half the cost of each mile driven on your vehicle, don’t you? Every mile you drive your car costs .25 to .50 cents in depreciation, wear & tear, and maintenance costs.
Putting those excessive miles on a rental vehicle in the space of a few days is a fiscally sound move
