Yes. Every southern state has it. Most states have it. Children are more susceptible than adults.

Wear a nose guard just in case. It only matters if water goes up your nose. That's how you contract it.

Cases of this were extremely rare back in the day. Extremely. You had to go to textbooks to even see how it looked. Labs just didn't see it. Immunodeficient patients have a drastic decreased ability to fight amoeba. With the dramatic increase of the life span of immunodeficient patients (esp Aids)this bacteria has become widespread. And yes, its in all La waterways. There are several diseases that fit this model.

Acanthamoeba keratitis is one of them. My wife almost lost her eye due to this. We believe she came into contact with it in Grand Isle.
