We already imprison a higher percentage of our population than any other country.

How do you plan on paying for the thousands of new jails we'll need?

The base sentence for a first time DWI should be a felony; one to five years imprisonment with or without hard labor, one year to be served without suspension of sentence;

that is fricking ridiculous

god you emotional thinkers really are a scary bunch

DWI is one of the most penalized misdemeanors in LA and felony DWI is a 1st offense felony with a mandatory year, which is rare

DWI is one of the top public safety concerns.

I am guessing most of the people who think DUI is no big deal have never been affected by it

It's amazing how much your perspective changes when you're directly affected by something. My parents were hit by a drunk driver and one of my best friends was hit by a drunk driver and was lucky to survive. In both cases the driver spent the night in jail and was free after that.

I am 100% for tougher penalties.

this bias is terrible for creating public policy. emotional responses like this have should have no place in a discussion about policy

My drunken high school friend who lived a block away killed himself, four others in the car with him and an elderly couple when he ran head-on into them.

The biggest wildcard on the highway that I fear is the unknown drunk driver, especially one that goes the wrong way on an interstate highway. It happens in Dallas/Fort Worth about two to three times a year. The driver is always drunk and always kills multiple people.

SFP drinking your own Kool Aid again I see.

Of course people should use their personal experience and the emotions stemming from personal experience in deciding public policy. The fact that my buddy had a child killed by a drunk driver should absolutely be part of my decision logic. As well as ten other people I have known. Not the only thing, but certainly part of anybody's evaluation about anything.

Repeat offenders should be felons and treated as such. From a public policy standpoint I'm all for leniency/education/fines/temporary license revocation etc for FIRST time offendors because I think that that would actually benefit the offender long term add save innocent lives. But just frick repeat offenders. They have no business being on the streets will all the law-abiding people bringing their kids to school and their family to the movies. Quit being such an apologist for these shitbags.

as has been posted in this very thread, texting while driving is much more dangerous than drunk driving

since it's a new behavior, society hasn't developed an encyclopedia of memories to reference when discussing it, which makes it seem less common and less dangerous. but facts are facts. i'm sure in a few years that will proliferate enough to where we have overreaction threads from people who love government to reaffirm their internal biases

emotional thinking should never be used to justify action against another human being

then you should be excluded from the discussion because you will provide nothing of substance to the discussion

These aren't isolated incidents. It's a pretty big issue. In 2013 there were over 10,000 deaths attributed to intoxicated driving in the United States (about 40% of all vehicle related deaths).

I'm disappointed that you can't reason your way through such a simple concept. I guess that defending these shitbags and taking that blood money changes one's perspective. You go, SFP.

actually they are

that's not very many in a country of 300M people, especially with our lax driving laws, our cultural issues, and illegal immigration

and the reason the charts typically start in the early 80s is b/c that's when MADD and similar organizations got involved, but the rates were declining before we lost our collective minds in this area

my stance is a general one

i don't make exceptions because of isolated stories with terrible results. not here. not anywhere

quote:

of the hundreds of open files i have right now i think one is a DWI

again, you're just proving my point

your irrationality in argument is now developing into a full blown logical fallacy (ad hom attack). if you've sunken to those levels, then, again, my point has been proven. that sort of thought process has no business in effecting policies that affect others

There is nothing quite like watching the narcissist become entranced by the sweet poetry of his own voice. Of course you believe your own bullshite. The fact that it comes from your mouth makes it true. That's the beauty of intellectual narcissism. It's impervious to reason.

You go SFP.

you do realize that your emotional-irrationality is now making you argue with reality, right?

how are these not isolated incidents? or a better question is: how are they related?

What do you actually know about current penalties for first time offenders?

Because you've actually described some of what first time offenders have to do.

he's not really asking for a change in sentencing 1st offense (like OP). he's asking for a change in sentencing 2nd offense

When you plant your rhetorical flag SFP, one does not really argue with you so much as witness you falling in love with the sound of your own voice. It's not really about drunk driving at that point, it's about seeing how silly you will become in defending your argument.

So far you have proposed that emotion should not be part of the policy debate and that DWI accidents, injuries and fatalities are "isolated incidents". And I have no doubt that you believe each ridiculous statement you make. Which just confirms my earlier point. Your love is not for Truth, but for SFP.

I love it when the dwi crusaders totally crawfish when texting and driving or tired driving comes up. No one wants to condemn those people, because everyone does that shite despite it being statistically just as bad.

i say that about all policy debates. this is just the particular issue for emotional ranting this morning b/c of the tragedy in stillwater

quote:

and that DWI accidents, injuries and fatalities are "isolated incidents".

well there may be such a thing as a cult based around injuring people while driving drunk, or a serial drunk driving-injurer

but i've never heard of them in reality. i'm willing to be educated

quote:

Your love is not for Truth, but for SFP.

i believe in rationality, not emotional-based thinking

why would i make an exception for this particular area (or any area)?

I'm not crawfishing. I totally agree. Texting is similarly irresponsible.
