If this story doesnt involve a gun to your head, not sure why you're bitching. Employee costs, insurance, mortgage/rent, taxes, product cost, waste, alcohol permit, equipment repairs and maintenance, utilities, merchant fee for every single cc transaction, etc, etc. Running a restaurant aint cheap unless you're keeping overhead low by cutting corners. Enjoy the 12 year olds' company and stop complaining. Its $24.

Not a good example of this
If everyone started buying water it would force the price down.

Yes. Food/drinks at a theme park like Six Flags.

Fast Food Joints make their money off of fries and soft drinks. A 40lb case of fries is under $20. It cost about 23 cents in product to make a 32 ounce drink.
Money Makers.
Money Makers.

Yeah. That was one of the dumbest things I have seen posted. “We are going to serve 600 people today. Let’s do everything at cost except drinks. We can clear a whole $1400 today!!”
Most sit down chain restaurants have around a 22%-28% food cost unless it is a steakhouse which can get up to 33+%. Pizza places are an exception.
The entrees all have profit but the drinks, appetizers, and desserts are the extras that determine how profitable a restaurant can be. They usually carry a 10% or less food cost. Stores have contests among servers to reward whoever sold the most apps or desserts in a given time frame whether it be a shift , a week, or a month.

People get confused because they hear that the drinks have the highest profit margin, which is likely true, and conflate that to restaurants make the most money off of drinks.
In the home improvement business, back in the 80s, the highest profit margin items were typically the sundries in the paint department but I guarantee that wasn't what most of the profits came from.

My parents used to say "that's where they get ya" every time we went out to eat and we wanted a soda. They weren't lying.

When I worked at Pizza Hut back in HS our biggest profits came from drinks, and garlic bread.

How about $7 for a 4-5 oz. glass of wine in a neighborhood bar. Oh, and not premium stuff either.

This is why I just get water, usually. Eff 'em.

Next thing:
(we tried a different Mexican restaurant)
Price of soft drink in can 1.79
Price of soft drink in glass 2.79
Price of styrofoam to go cup 0.50
add state tax on food (10%) and tip 15%
And this restaurant charges for tap water in a glass.
