re: Is the Toyota Tacoma truly a "mid-sized" truck?

I don't know, but I saw one of the new Colorado's the other day and was very impressed. Great looking truck.
The Colorado is the best mid sized truck on the market now....but with the absence of a smaller option, both it and the Tacoma are technically modern day compact trucks.

Tacoma and others in that class = small truck
150/1500 trucks = mid size
250/2500 and up = full size
Except the 2500/250 and 1500/150 share widths, track, panels, and even wheelbases....making them the same physical size even though they carry different payload.
I don't think we have a option for a mid sized truck. Just compact and large.
I think a truck the size of the Ford Ranger or Chevy S-10 from the late 1990s/early 2000's would sell well. They were both handsome little rigs and cheap to run.

It's also the "ugliest"

I happen to think it's better looking than the Tacoma, Frontier, and Canyon. That's why I bought one.

I think they look great. I like the Canyon too. They can't seem to keep many on the dealership lots for long, so they are doing something right. I may look at a Duramax diesel model in a few months.
The 2015 Tacoma looks nice as well, but the 2016 is hideous. Not sure what they were thinking.

Not sure why Toyota butchered the 2016 Tacoma? Looks like a cartoon. They looked fine before. Why change a good thing?

isn't the tacoma basically a camry with a truck body?
No. It's an Avalon frame with a truck body.

This is how perspective gets messed up - all those trucks are larger than their predecessors just a decade or so ago. The Tacoma is roughly size of the old F-100 and Chevy trucks from the 70s, yet you consider it "small". While it is one of the smaller trucks in the North American market - it is huge - just not as huge as all the other trucks.
Guy down my street has a nice 1969 GMC 1/2 ton, I recently had the opportunity to take a ride in it, was amazed at how small it seemed.

awesome truck so long as you really don't have to do truck stuff.
That's true of nearly every truck out there in the US market. Most are luxury cars for dudes who think they need a bed, but really don't.
Bring back real trucks.

1. Tacoma double cab with v6 is all the truck most folks need. Unless they hate resale, love to trade their trucks every 8 months, and have penile issues.
2. The price of the Tacoma's (and the colorado/canyons), especially the new ones is a little bit nuts...35K for a mid sized truck with a V6 and no leather...? I can get a nice v8 silverado crewcab for the same price.
3. The diesel thing is just like the hybrid thing. Pay 8K more for 5mpg's on the highway....better keep that thing a long time to make that make sense.

Agreed.
My post was kind of a joke about how trucks have grown overall.
Looking back just a few years, we see that what were once "full size" trucks would now be, at best, midsize.

All Tacomas and Tundras for the U.S. market are made in San Antonio, Texas, baw.
So, they're Mexican trucks?

Isn't the Avalon unibody?

Or the Tacomas from that era - they were wonderful little trucks.

Standard 1/2 ton is mid-size.
3/4 ton is full-size.
'Merica, dang right, bub.
That's funny seeing as a standard 1/2 ton is the same size as a 3/4 ton or 1 ton

My Tacoma is a 4 door 4x4 and it's okay. Definitely not the reliability god everyone makes it out to be
