re: Is the Toyota Tacoma truly a "mid-sized" truck?

In my experience, Toyota reliability is grossly exaggerated.....but the Taco and 4Runner are the best that company makes. I suspect their reputation was built on the cars and trucks Toyota offered 25+ years ago.

Just had to replace the entire 4 wheel drive system and it's already broken again. It hasn't even been two months and I have never taken it off road.

Yeah. My brother'a 4Runner went through a couple of front ends. It's a pretty common problem with Toyota trucks. He sold it after about 170,000 miles. Other than the front axle problems, a cracked dashboard, and one power seat component, it was a decent vehicle. It was far from trouble free and pretty expensive to repair.

Not all Tacomas. Many are made in Baja, Mexico which coincidentally is also where the plastic beds that are installed on ALL Tacomas come from.

So I compared the interior dimensions of the current Tacoma to a 2011 Ford Ranger. The Tacoma doesn't look to be that much larger than the retired compact truck on the inside.
Tacoma:
Head Room: 40.0"
Hip Room: 53.6"
Leg Room: 41.7"
Shoulder Room: 57.7"
Ranger:
Head Room: 39.2"
Hip Room: 52.7"
Leg Room: 42.4"
Shoulder Room: 54.5"
ETA: This compared a Tacoma Access Cab (extended cab) to a regular cab Ranger

So, they're Mexican trucks?
Hahaha! See my post above!

Wait, what? Is this common knowledge? What are the pros/cons of this configuration?

Colorado is nice looking but Tacomas blow these things away with impeccable reliability & fantastic resale. The new '16 Tacomas just came out last week too.

Nice sales pitch. Your manager would be proud

Plastic bed liners.
Of a bed liner? Who cares.

Lol! I don't have a Tacoma but have a 2000 4Runner & it's been an incredible vehicle. I buy cars to last a long time so Chevy would be out for me.

2016 Toyota Tacoma 4x4
The 4wd Toyota I drove in High School
Perspective is different, but they are definitely mid-sized compared to what they used to be and what they Tundras are currently.

I had a 99 and an 04 Tacoma, and just couldn't break them. They saw more shite than a sewer plant, but just kept on keeping on. I was really hard on the 04. I drive like a bat out of hell and it had Swampers for most of its life. Stuck it so many times I couldn't begin to count, tipped it over twice, rock crawling, water on the inside up to the radio, water on the outside up to the windows many times, ran straight into a tree going 35. The fricker just wouldn't quit.
99 was a 4x4 std cab 2.7
04 was a 4x4 TRD ext cab 3.4
Then I bought a F250 for $27k and proceeded to spend another $30k fixing it over the four years I owned it (3 of which were sitting in a shop). Wish I could take that one back
It's a shame to hear that their reliability has gone down. They earned that reputation, and I guess are comfortable throwing it away

So a f350 dually is the same size as a f150, and a 1500 is the same size as a 3500HD? I don't think so
That's not what mid and full size refer to.
What you're thinking of if more along the lines of 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton etc.

gtfo with that garbage.some of us need to tow a little more than a 14' bateau...which is about all that compact truck is good for.those little toy's will sure go thru some shite off-road, i'll give them that.
Changed transmission fluid twice. Never had an issue.
Sold truck with 170,000 miles on it.
This was an 07 DC Prerunner 4 door

I still have my 2006 Tundra V6 in my driveway. 120,000 miles and it's never been in the shop but for brakes and tires. I have towed a 24 ft bay boat many times with it, and have been less than religious about oil changes.
We just traded in my wife's 2004 Camry that had 140k on it. Also only needed tires and brakes.
20 years and almost 300,000 miles worth of Toyotas with ZERO mechanical issues.
I have three buddies with Ford trucks (150, 250 King Ranch) and they have all had countless mechanical and electronic issues in far fewer years than my Toyota.

No, the bed itself. Not the liner that covers the bed.

shite, I had one exactly like that! That thing was indestructible.
I have an 06 Taco for a daily driver... it will tow my 6x12 enclosed trailer well enough, but the bed is too small for a lot of things. I break out the Ram 2500 if I'm hauling anything though.
