re: Is the necktie obsolete? Why do we still wear it?

Most fatties buy their shirts too tight in the neck. The tie is not the problem. It's the top button on their shirts that makes wearing a tie uncomfortable for those that don't know how to properly size themselves.

I just got rid of about a dozen older ones. My wife got me two nicer ones last week. I wear a tie 4 days a week. No problem with it. I actually learned to tie a decent knot instead of the old 4 in hand my Dad taught me when I was 15. It can make or break how you look.
And since we're discussing ties, and I'm curious since the pic with the red dress shirt was posted, are there people near where y'all live that don't know how to tie one properly? I was at a funeral a couple of years ago, and all of my relatives that live out in the country had their ties on, but the tip of it was way above the belt. Like it just stopped at their stomach. I'm guessing they probably tied it once several years ago and just slipped it over their head until the next time they had to wear it.

I always assumed the point of the necktie was to add some color and variance to people's wardrobes. Not everyone has 5 or so different colored suits, so the way you give the illusion of wearing different clothes is to wear a different tie.

No.

Why do we still wear it?
Because certain occasions still call for it.

The tie has to be one of the most pointless pieces of apparel in existence today.
Not if you work in a professional environment.

I've never had a problem with the necktie. But then again, I don't have a fat neck so I'm not really uncomfortable when wearing them. They bring the suit together and people will more than likely treat you with a little bit more respect.

There is no shirt that fits my body.

There's a ton of items we still use that are obsolete. We still do it because it's a cultural staple and fashion statement. I mean, we could all have Velcro shoes, but we don't.

There is a problem with professional culture if it takes a tie to make someone respect you more (and I work in this type of environment).

In silicon valley, I've heard that wearing a tie makes them disrespect you.
It's just evolved versions of gang wear. You have to fit in with peers, it's primal.

I see this occasionally and it drives me crazy. A coworker wears his this way everyday

See, I would say something to a coworker. At a relative's funeral to another relative, not so much.

Show me one case in history where the fashion industry formulated some revolutionary advancement in humanity. And I'm not talking about stuff like hardhats. That's function not fashion.

I would have laughed if I hadn't seen it work myself. Dude was all of a sudden a God in the office. It really takes your style up a notch.
You know, I've been on projects this civil engineer that does this everyday. Every meeting I've been to, he's sported coat and tie with pocket square or boutonniere. I'll be damned if even I don't think, "that dude is a boss."

The sumbitch that invented the neck tie should have been hanged with it. I'm all for doing away with them forever.

Aesthetics. Some people just don't get it. We call them dullards.
