Completely opposite. Mine went to culinary school in France and then completely shifted gears into selling advertising. So she could cook but she was never home to do it.
My maw maw grew up on a farm in rural South Louisiana, and told me it was her job to cook for the family of 9 when she was 8 years old. She lived a mile away from me growing up, and could make a grilled cheese taste like a gourmet meal.

older people who never once realized how goddam easy they had it
I’m 63. When I was 29 I had four kids under five and a stay at home wife. I was paid about $40,000. I had a house that I bought for $65k and put $20k more into it. When I bought it the house was about 60% complete. I did the shoring (foundation was bad), plumbing, electrical, alarm system, painting, cabinets, and miscellaneous other stuff myself when I was 25 and expecting our first child.
We probably ate out once per month as a couple and never as a family, besides my wife getting them fast food rarely. My wife and I didn’t go to the movies or go on a vacation for 10 years until we were about 35. Every two weeks I was paid, and my wife paid all the bills and gave me about $30 for fuel and so I could go get po-boys with coworkers every Friday. She would buy groceries for the next two weeks and maybe have $50 left for contingencies.
Gradually, I was able to increase earnings in my late 30’s and pull away from the bills. You said “older people who never once realized how goddam easy they had it“. Well, I considered all of that easy. Why don’t you?

A lot of people just prefer to point the finger.

That does sound easy
That’s about a 210K house today
What’s it worth now?

My wife can do that but it takes a $15 loaf of bread, $40 of cheese, and Le Beurre Bordier butter that she has to take a bridge loan out to buy. I am guessing maw maw did it for a quarter with change back.

Everything in Crisco
I never said it was healthy, but man that woman could cook.

That’s not booming

From a health POV, I have lived long enough for every basic foodstuff to go through cycles of being good and bad for you so I just try to eat in moderation.
As for Crisco, I got to a point in life where the idea of shortening being used for anything in cooking beyond seasoning cast iron sounded disgusting. That is odd because all the older women in my family often used it as a principal ingredient and their food was mouth-wateringly good. I still can get over the idea of them digging it out of a #10 can with their hands and mixing huge globs of it into something or cooking something in it.

The funny thing is that my paw paw ate her food most of his life and lived to be almost 100. Bacon, eggs etc for breakfast every single morning. He did work outside a lot and never was fat.

Hell if I know. I owned it for eight years and sold it for about $120k in 1993. I don’t think it appreciated at all; that was all sweat equity. Then I GC’d my next house, and built it for $135k, with me doing all of the same crafts as before, while I was working full time.
My son is in his early 30’s and he and his stay at home wife are expecting their third child. He has about a 2500 sq ft house in Metairie. Seems about the same as me. It took him a little longer to get where I was, but it also took him a little longer to get serious about life. We have/had nearly identical jobs.

It's simply obfuscation caused by industry-funded studies, commissioned explicitly to discredit independent, peer-reviewed research; with the extremely effective end-goal of making the average consumer think, "They can't even make up their minds, so I might as well eat what I want."

There’s plenty of homes Im seeing that are very affordable, under $400k and some quite a bit under that. Gas was $2.74 today. Grocery prices if you are smart and somewhat look for deals and don’t just buy what’s on social media, are very reasonable.
The main problem today is social media and people living well above their means because they think it’s normal. It wasn’t normal in the 70s,80s, and 90s do have smart phones, huge luxury vehicles, eating out multiple times a week, etc. That’s not inflation, that’s luxury lifestyle creep.
Living like we did in the 90s isn’t being a caveman, it’s being realistic. Anything above and beyond that should be a luxury. With any decent work ethic you can make $25/ hour these days. I have 0 sympathy right now. If you are poor you are lazy. If you are broke, you are just great at making bad choices over and over and over.

I work down in the CBD in Nola and try to get a walk in most days at lunch. I walk the same route which takes me past a few restaurants normally frequented by lots of tourists. I’ve noticed the last several times I’ve walked by these places that are normally packed, are practically empty.
Could be the heat keeping folks away but there is a noticeable lack of folks where normally there are plenty.

Yeah, no shite. I didn't insult them or talk down on them. But this is a small town, I actually know many of them and what they do for a living, so sorry for wondering how the clerk at my local Speedway drops $150+ on dinner for his family of five once a week. Goddamn, you are always searching for an argument.
Damn, I was just asking a question

I'll be honest, I had a little trouble deciphering your point so I just went with what I thought was most likely. That could be on me as well.

That’s almost $120k in today’s money which would put you in the top third of ALL earners today at 29 years old.
Thanks for making our point
