Oh my God! If the Coast Guard is here posting on TD then who's doing nothing on the boat?

Thanks for giving me the online induction. What rank am I starting out as?

May I be an officer?

a good friend is currently doing his "tour" with the coast guard in Cuba

he said they basically just scuba dive and work out all day

anyway, he strongly recommends it

My grandfather is the only person I know or even. Heard of that was a merchant marine. It must be pretty small.

Yep, most are automated now. They are gorgeous though. I think they would make great lodges or B&B's.

This was back in the mid-80's when this guy's dad was on lighthouse duty. I always wondered what the hell he did to pass the time out there like that for two weeks at a time... and who he had pissed off to get such an assignment. I don't know if this is true or not but I believe when he'd be out at one of these lighthouses it would be just him and one other dude. At least that's what his son said.

Coast guard members must be at least 6 ft tall.

This keeps getting posted, but it's not true.
Standard for height for all branches, including the Coast Guard, can be found in AR 40-501, Standards of Medical Fitness which is the same regulation that MEPS uses.

Saw a Coast Guard helicopter rescue a guy that got swept out to sea at this beach on Kauai in December. It was an awesome thing to see live.

Coast Guard?

Pretty good group, not very militaristic.

A couple of the lighthouses around here had 4 guys who rotated. they had a basketball platform and boats to explore the area. I think it would be pretty damn cool myself.

I've seen them perform sea rescues and they do land searches with their choppers locally via the Air Station Sitka. They perform a pretty damn good service. The Cutter Liberty is stationed in Auke Bay (Where I live) and their HQ is next door to my place. It's just a house, regular old brown house.

I would agree with the poster saying the Coast Guard are mostly incompetent. The rescue swimmers and pilots definitely deserve major props, but I have met and had to deal with quite a few pretty worthless Coasties.

Been on that beach twice! It's only 2 miles from the start of the Kalulau trail that starts at Ke'e Beach. You can hike on a side trail 2 miles inland to some falls. That is where you swim.....not at that beach!

**that is the trail in the photo. Did not see it the first time.

Bet that had to get boring back in the 80's before the advent of things like the internet and satellite TV.

I remember we had a Coast Guard Base in Ketchikan, I'm guessing it's still there.

It was on the south end of town right next to where during the summer we'd fuel up the boat before going out to work on one of the uninhabited islands helping another one of my friend's dad build a cabin. His plan was to homestead the island.

I am thinking about the military when I graduate college. Looking at the air force or coast guard.

So you want to look as though you've joined the military without actually having to join the military.

Makes sense.

Quit dodging the question! What is the status of the Coast Guard's size in comparison to the other branches? And what may be a cause for it?

We have 44,000 people and RIF'fin to 38,000. CG is cool but we have the worst leadership of any of the branches at the officer level and E7 and above.

When I was going through MEPS I met this chick going into the CG.

Her - "What branch/job are you doing?"

Me - "Navy... mechanic"

Her - "Oh cool! I'm going CG and I'm going to jump out of helicopters"

Me - staring at her a few seconds "Are they going to give you a parachute or something?"

Her - "NO, SILLY! Like I'm going to jump in the water and save people!"

This chick was as dumb as a box of rocks... but she did look good.

Yup. We had to flag down tour helicopters with a big SOS in the sand so they could contact the coast guard because there was obviously no service at that beach and nobody had a satellite phone. The guy was in the water for probably 1.5hrs before the coast guard showed up so he was lucky.
