According to Wikipedia, "Sandbagging in golf is deliberately playing below one's actual ability in order to fool opponents into accepting higher stakes bets."

The older I get, the more I think that this is a really important skill to have.

Give a customer what they want a week early, and that's what they'll expect from then on. This expectation will easily outlive their gratitude.

Give your girlfriend a ring, and a baby, and a house, and she'll complain that the baby wants Fritos instead of her nasty Mackerel Florentine and the countertops aren't quartz.

Buy your kid a Mustang and he'll ask for a Corvette. It would've been easier to give him a Toyota Yaris and then deal with his request for a Mustang.

Maybe it's better to just guard whatever you are able to provide jealously. Dole that shite out like Stalin handing out stale crackers.

One variation of what I am saying is, "give them an inch and they'll take a mile." Better to give them a centimeter and act like you really don't even have that.

Perception management is every bit as important as the job you do

This strategy could work with a kid, but not with a wife.

You’re underestimating women’s ability to sniff out exactly how much you’re making. They can tell the difference between cheap and broke.

Define success first.
Choose to follow Jesus and you’ll bump your way down a road filled with potholes but you’ll never be in fear and always be content. Who cares about what others think? Play the long game. Making others happy never works. Make God proud, the rest will work itself out.

Be good at your job, but not so good that you can't be promoted.

In my experience there is a fine line between sand bagging and just being good for nothing

I was reading a discussion about using scripts to automate work resulting in free time yet still delivering early. They called it goldbricking.

Hold back while I pass you by, doesn't matter what you know its what they think I know.

But hey, I have your back. Will work on your vacation time when I get a minute.

I think that's as good an answer as any. There are times when you have to let go and forward your problems to God. I don't know what He looks like or even if He exists for sure- that's why it's called faith and we should all remember that.

Under promise
Over deliver

ETA

“Evil, when can you that done”
“Best I may be able to do is three months”
“Ok”

One month later

“ how did you get that done in only a month“
“ we move some things around Bumped you in front of some other projects and made some miracles happen“
“ wow you and your team are awesome let’s get you in line for that promotion“
