I learned this lesson the hard way at my job. For years I worked hard and put in extra hours to get shite done, but the “shite” on my plate never got less. They will feed you as much work as you can handle and then some. If they will never let you “get ahead,” there’s no point in trying to.

Perception management is more important. Usually the guy that is fun at golf tournaments and does marginal work gets promoted ahead of the quiet guy busting arse.

My wife went to the ATM one day (used my card and PIN) and came back with a receipt and said "were not broke, why do you keep saying were broke"...

I responded "if I wouldn't, we would be"

Works for me...

We must work in the same department at the same company for the same manager with the same stakeholders.

In government work, this is an art form.

Sound like a lot of hassle. I just do what I want. People can take it or leave it.

When I was a swimmer it was fun to sandbag and play with other people, think they’re doing well and then take off and blow them away. Strong silence/stay in your own lane is the way I go and never volunteer for any leadership role or “committee”. Just do well at your job and provide for family is all I care about. I’m lucky that all my work stays at work... only work 3 days a week and don’t have to take any BS home

So, low expectations and mediocrity are what you're striving for.

Sounds like a fun way to live-------

I always act a little clueless when first meeting someone to see if they’re the type of person that will try and take advantage.

Sandbagging sounds exhausting.

The one thing I want and expect is realism.

I can’t make good decisions without accurate information. And other people need to know what I can produce and when.

If that isn’t good enough. Then I’m in the wrong job.

I support sales people in a technical capacity (sales engineer). They all want everything NOW, regardless if it's actually deserving of that priority or not, so they can close their deals. I always build a little extra time into whatever timelines I give because then if I get delayed nobody's breathing down my neck.

It's just managing expectations. Best case: I finish quicker, worst case: I deliver on time.

I think sandbagging as a concept is different from "give an inch they'll take a mile." Wouldn't sandbagging be something like asking questions you already know the answer to of your boss just to hear their answer and acting like you're learning, so everyone thinks your slightly an idiot or something then at the chosen time you drop some sort of work product or move that is 10 steps beyond what all the people who think you're dumb could have done?

Sad but true. We’ve got our fair share of trophy-hires where I work

We would probably have a lot fewer bratty kids if people parented this way.

I agree. Be a man and hit a homerun every time you step up to the plate. Let the betas purposely make poor decisions and act like a clueless dumb blonde

Man y'all are all over the place. Everyone knows it is who you know not what you know. Whoever is your superior, find their superior and kiss that sweet taint. Find the biggest dong in the room and get to suckin poppa..no homo. Seriously though, nobody cares about your "hard work" or "busting your arse" If you aren't befriending your boss then you will go nowhere.
