Is paying fines or tickets in coins such as pennies and nickels legal?

Youtube videos of this have been popping into my feed.

Lets say I have a $50.00 parking ticket from a local police force and I go to pay it in $50 worth of pennies, could they refuse to accept it? US currency is good for all debts public and private and it is legal tender.

Clearly, inconvenient for the cashier and a little for me (having to go to the bank and withdraw all these pennies). But I'm paying the amount owed and the convenience of them handling a $50 vs. $50 in pennies isn't a concern of mine.

Yes, they can refuse it, despite the second phrase above there is no Federal statute that mandates anyone accept coins or currency as payment.

Sounds like a great idea

Until some 300-pound clerk named LaNeesha goes off on you in front of everyone

Parmen may have gotten popped by the Houma Police department and forgot to pay in their 14 day window.

It is 5 dollars and change if you go within 5 days.

If you forget and go within 14 days it jumps to like 10 and change.

If you go after that, but before going to court it is 50 and change.

If you let it go court it could go as high as a hundred and some change.

Still if germain to Houma, just wait until they start that road diet downtown foolishness with reducing traffic to one lane and arse end angled parking.

She would probably just make him sit and wait while she took 3 or 4 hours to count his money and then come up with the wrong number, assuming she doesn't just have a change counter in the first place.

Her check stays the same whether her window serves one customer or 100 that day.

I'm 99% sure most don't accept a lot of coins

if I were the cashier I would smile, take your money and proceed to count that money at a sloths pace while you sit down and quickly regret attempting to be "cool".

I find those videos to be just a hair less cringe worthy than the "sovereign citizen" "I'm not driving, I'm traveling" videos.

I have done it twice. Once recently for $99. It was inconvenient to unroll the coins but satisfying at the same time.
