I fully expect the downvotes. So many ancestors of people reading this were drafted to perform treasonous acts against this man's country, but someone provide me with good evidence why this is wrong.

Yup. That's all true. And it's probably the worst stain on us as a country. But to this day, people in the south have just never liked the government telling them what they can and cannot do, regardless of what it is.

No. And West Virginia and Maryland aren't part of the South either.

Also of note, while historically part of the South, Virginia has nothing in common with Southern culture today.

It’s like many if not most states. The rural parts are conservative and “southern” feeling. The urban parts are not. So northern and eastern parts don’t feel very south.

Oklahoma has more in common with Nebraska than Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana

The way I look at it, if you didn’t fight for the Confederacy during the Civil War, you’re not a southern state. Except Missouri, frick Missouri.

can assure you that places like Eunice are nowhere near similar to MS, AL, or FL

To be more specific, west of BR and south of the 31st parallel + the River Parishes are similar. LA north of the 31st parallel and the Florida Parishes are pretty similar.

I use I-10 because it generally works.

I would say south of Alexandria is a decent cutoff point. Yes, there are some rednecks mixed in there but it's a more accurate delineation.

Yeah, this isn't a terrible breakdown, but I'd probably make some changes:

Acadiana and the River Parishes are pretty distinct, but this is close enough.

Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, but Florida mostly because of geographical location.

Anyone who says this has never spent much time in east Texas. Or southeast Oklahoma.

The two states are far larger than just those small areas of the whole. I don't think anyone thinks there aren't similar places to the south in those states. Hell, any state has areas that seem country.

The only reason Kentucky and Virginia are considered the South is because people have accents there
right, Virginia, birthplace of Robert E Lee is only southern because of the accents
