It seems ok to me. I go there for work 4-5 times per year. Not sure what the residential side of things are, but been to some pretty good restaurants there, and it's close to a lot of historical sites.

No. I went to high school there when my dad was stationed at a nearby Army base. The numbered streets are Bad Newz. Nearby York County and Williamsburg are very nice places to live and within 15 miles. I enjoyed my summers working at Busch Gardens.

The only thing I know about Newport News is that Michael Vick is from there. I'm gonna go ahead and guess that it's a terrible place.

Vick is from Hampton which is basically the same area as Newport News.
