Is Mars a part of nature, and it is ethical for us to terraform that planet?

For the discussion assume we could somehow get Mars’ magnetosphere working again.

Do we own Mars, and is it right for us to fundamentally change it?

Mars doesn't even exist. It is a hologram.

Yes. That’s never stopped us in the past. If we let that stop us we’d still be fighting lions and hyenas in Africa.

We're a long way away from another potentially habitable planet so we should probably decide if we want to die on this rock or not.

Though, current theory is we're running into a brick wall eventually anyway.

Probably no one, but is it morally right for us to change nature on another planet?

Yes. Humanity should treat the cosmos like the pioneers treated the American West. It’s expand or die.

If no one outside of our species is there to give the variable of morality, I don't see how we'd even consider it a question of morality.

ETA: Honestly though, this is one of the highest level things I've seen on the OT in quite some time

Solid thread

If we don't colonize Mars how can we one day go to war with the people of Mars?

My favorite part of the day where we spend time and energy worrying about other planets when we can't even manage the one we're on.

People are always crying about climate change and how it's gonna kill us all. If we hypothetically had the ability to terraform Mars, wouldn't be easier and make more sense to just terraform Earth if it got destroyed by climate change?

As long as we don't import slaves from Africa to Mars all is well.

Also, these people can't even figure out which bathroom to use or how to get out from under their desk wearing a mask hiding from the sniffles. Traveling to and inhabiting mars is going to be fricking hard work, they want no part of that.

Who even owns Earth? What is the fundamental difference of owning this vs another planet. Occupying is temporary ownership.

I remember some scientists making that argument too. Terraforming an entire planet that is relatively far away and from scratch is going to be a hell of a lot more complex then “fixing” Earth.
