I don’t know if she is racist or not, but the context of her use of the n word here doesn’t indicate it. She is dumb for saying it and even dumber for recording herself say it, but adults, like the admissions person at UT, should be able to see the context and respond appropriately.
need to know if she went with the hard r or the soft a

i though that was a pretty obvious joke

It was. I almost prefaced my comment by saying “I know you are joking, but...”
I just wanted to make the point that context matters.

Yeah, Jimmy is a piece of trash and she was just repeating what the song said. Don't like the word, don't put it in your music.

Doing stupid stuff as a freshman in high school is not a race thing.
It is a freshman in high school thing.
It is a freshman in high school thing.

I agree. It's dumb as hell to drag up things people did in HS and try to judge them about it when they are adults.
I'd have probably had all kinds of cringe worthy content out their judging from the "My Senior Year" book I found in my closet a year or two ago.

Jimmy will be a miserable adult and will be a failure.
She will emerge stronger.
She still wins.
She will emerge stronger.
She still wins.

This falls squarely on the shoulders of the media. There's absolutely no reason for a major news outlet like the NYT to dedicate any time to crushing some kid for doing what kids do.

HS and college kids are morons. That shouldn't be a news story. I'm just glad there's not much video or photo evidence of that time period for me.

This is akin to the jerk that released the Laramy (sp?) Tunsil smoking weed video on the night of the NFL draft.
I also like how galligan promptly left Virginia and took his arse to California

There was some NBA or NFL player that took a lot of shite for posting that he didn't like the gays on Twitter or something like that when he was in the damn 9th grade. Ridiculous.

Kids is a sociopath, and the social media destruction of this young woman’s collegiate experience over her ignorance as a 15 year old is disgusting.
With that said, the OP seems to be a bit sociopathic as well, given his seemingly intentional complete disregard for the truth...
OP said this...
Op says this...
OP says this...
I’m all aboard the “this kid is an a-hole” bandwagon. But I don’t understand the OP’s desire to tell 3 bold faced lies in 3 sentences when the truth of the article is scandalous enough. That feels crazy in its own right.

high school freshman girl singing along to a rap song that has the n-word.
Op says this...
quote:...but the article says the kid received the video last year. He did hold it until after she got into college, and he does seem like a genuine piece of shite. But the article expressly says he received the video last year, not 3 years ago.
He then decides to hold onto the video for 3 years
OP says this...
quote:...but nowhere in the article is he called a hero, or even presented in a favorable light.
NYT writes an article calling him a hero

Even if the girl was in the wrong, I can’t stand tattletales. Waiting for the opportune time to strike, like he did, created a situation that was especially disproportionate to the offense created by the girl.
I guess that’s what upsets me most about the situation. When he first saw the video, Jimmy should have pulled the girl aside and told her, “hey, that wasn’t cool. I was offended by that. How about you drop using that word from now on? I would appreciate it.” But no. He chose to “teach her a lesson” by nuking her life from afar.
Everyone makes mistakes, and when they do, we should help them not continue the mistake. Educate them, help them, talk with them. Don’t stab them from the shadows like that. That’s the act of a coward.
