I have no idea but I thought volunteers were people who give up their own time without being compensated for it, in order to help work on something.

Receiving what looks like a minimal living alowance isn't exactly getting paid if these people are part of some full time volunteer program. That amount is less than minimum wage. You could make more than that doing literally anything else. It just makes it to where more than the children of the wealthy can afford to give back to their community when they are young and gaining life experience.

So $1k/month for living expenses, a minimum of $6k/year for health insurance/child care, and free tuition is now considered "volunteering"? How much time are these people required to "volunteer" in order to receive these benefits?
They should just call it what it is - a part time job (with unbelievable benefits).

If they go to LSU, they could potentially be earning up to $30k/year between tuition, "living expenses", and benefits.

The job application says Full Time
Does not specify 40 hours a week
Does not specify working hours either
So basically, a part time job

Wife of guy I work with does something similar
Works in one of the BR schools (not a good one)
Makes very little pay
Gets health insurance
Gets about 400 in food stamps
Gets college credits for it

Isn’t it an americorps program? If so it is essentially volunteering. You sign up for americorps and they decide where to send you. It’s meant to work with people in poverty and also live in poverty at the same time to understand what it is like.

The proper name would be "wealth redistribution". People who go to work earn money which is taxed and those funds are redistributed through federal and state programs and given to those that don't "work" but would like some money thrown their way without any real effort. Free food,rent,cash for clunkers ect doesn't provide enough disposable income, so I guess I had better "volunteer" and get some spending money. St George can't happen soon enough.
