Is it legal to deny a person a pet adoption, due to age?

My mom went to get a cat from a rescue organization in San Antonio. They said they don't adopt to people over 60.
I didn't think you could use age as a metric for applications.
I don't know sounds shitty. She just turned 60 too.

Pet adoption people have insane criteria. You'd think living in a small apartment would be better than a shelter but not to these crazy fricks.
Some of them are about as bright as the Twitter all stars that want to release Mike the Tiger in Nepal.

Honestly, we got a pedigree dog because the adoption agencies drove me nuts.
Something to say about picking out a dog and getting it. Rather than filling out an application, then having a lady with hairy pits and BO come to your house and critiquing every aspect of your yard and house. Then having to wait days to find out someone else got ther dog you wanted but they have a pit bull mix available.

Some cats live to be 20. Who knows what'll happen to that thing if she dies.

While I don't agree with that policy at all, there's nothing even close to illegal about it.

Yes but dwelling isn’t under the anti discrimination laws, age, race, religion, gender, etc....

We tried to adopt a dog a year ago from one of these independent rescues. Filled out the app and everything.
We weren’t allowed to even do the “test weekend” with the pup because we had a 2 year old in our house and this dog “nipped” her 6 year old boy.
I agreed that we didn’t want a dog that was aggressive to kids but was willing to see if it worked for us or not.
They stopped responding to my texts/emails for other dogs too. Worked out in the end. A stray showed up at my cousin’s farm a few weeks later and he’s been an awesome member of our family for over a year.

We have adopted some dogs but I've had to fight with some of the rescue agencies. They want to send someone to do a house inspection, and I'll be damned if I let anyone come inspect my house.

I've been told they don't believe I would have been a good home for pets. I've had two dogs for 10+ years with no issues.

I'd love to adopt a cat, then when they call to come by and check on it, just say,
"Well, that would be great, but I asked Mr. Chang, my next door neighbor to watch it for me while I was away overnight and when I returned he said the cat is missing."

tried an adoption from a rescue agency. the dog they brought was older but not bad. then they started describing the rules and the agency rights to take it back. told them no to many constraints

I assume my cat will eat me if I die. It’ll keep her fed until I’m found and she’s cared for. Circle of life.

I once tried to rescue a puppy, but they wouldn’t let me adopt because i didn’t have a fenced in yard even though i live on 6 acres. After that i decided i hate shelters and would never donate another dime to them. They will be their own undoing.

When my last dog died, I really tried to to adopt a dog of the same breed (rare herding breed). Multiple rescues were crazy with the criteria (based on crating, yard size, fence height, etc) and I got denied about 10 times. I said eff it and bought the dog I wanted. He’s fine with the crate time, yard size, and fence height we were denied. I didn’t want to do it, but I wanted that particular breed and I wasn’t going to sell my house for a dog.

Rescue organizations can be over zealous but I find shelters—particularly in rural parishes/counties—are far less stringent. Show up and leave with a pet, usually pay $100 at the most, often less, especially less for a cat.
