Disrespecting an officer while on duty is certainly illegal and will get you slapped around at minimum and possibly in jail.

In your car, no (pretty sure there was a court case [supreme maybe?] That ruled this)

But if you stick your hand out the window to do it, they can slap you with "improper signaling" or some shite.

Definitely not. In my experience flipping them off just makes them want to avoid you all together, no one likes an a-hole.

The finger is protected under freedom of speech I would assume.

Its rather amusing when people try to agitate cops and then complain when their is action taken by the cop.

The finger might be protected, but you reaching for my gun and my appropriate response from 20 yards away isn't.

Technically no, not in and of itself.

There might be a context issue. (in view of minors, etc.)

The finger has been determined to be protected expression.

It's not the wisest play.

Sometimes legal and correct are not the same in the real world.

Not illegal, but it pisses them off enough to turn around and stop you for a little coversation.

I found this out first hand. I was in Florida driving down the coast highway a couple cars behind a garbage truck. The garbage truck had a flock of seagulls pursuing and one of the seagulls dove and landed smack dab on my windshield and got tangled up in the wipers. I turned the wipers on and sprayed him with washer fluid and he got loose and flopped off the roof of my car into the traffic behind me, where the seagull hit a cop car

The cop pulls me over and gets his ticket book and starts writing. I ask "what am I getting a ticket for?" And the cop says:

"You flipped me the bird!"

This is dumb. Just goes to show you that the actual laws are almost as relevant as what laws the popo wants to make up.

Not enough info to answer. Are you black, white, or other?

Because people saying mean things to you gives you a reasonable fear of your life...
