Is it a good idea to buy a car that was used previously as a rental?

No. What you pay for it, versus what its worth is a HUGE Gap.

There are alot of cars on used car lots that were rentals at one time or another. More than you think. Most of the time they are not in bad shape and should have maintanence records.

I will put it this way. I bought a used car once from a dealership. Two days later I found paperwork in the car showing that it had been a rental that the dealership purchased at an auction. I went back to the dealership and they gave me all of my money back without argument and apologized for not disclosing this fact up front. Ask yourself, how often do used car dealers give money back?

You should have your answer or else you deserve what you get.

If its a premium car or above from a major rental company and was at an airport location, sure.

Other than that, nope.

85% of used Nissans, Toyotas, Fords, and Chevy cars were rentals.

Car Rental places purchase them from Dealers...and in return, agree to sell them back around the 25k-30k mark.

This is why the resale values on these cars suck.

This is how they end up with so many used rentals. Between Enterprise and Hertz, they buy and sell around 1-1.5 million cars a year.

ETA: Rental companies are partly responsible for keeping Dodge/Chrysler in business. They purchased and made deals to purchase thousands and thousands of vehicles. These vehicles were bought, rented and sold as used within a year or so. Inflates used car market big time.

the higher end cars are only held by rental companies for 15k miles. My mom bought a caddy that was a rental and had it checked by her mechanic before she bought it. It was a great car.

Almost all my cars have been previous rentals. I've done fine. There is almost no other way to buy a 1 yr old or so vehicle, with less than 25k miles. Its either a rental or a lease that was turned in. People don't buy vehicles and trade them In the next year -- for the very same reason I buy year-old vehicles, the vehicle depreciates considerably in the first year. Much more than in subsequent years.

One positive about this route, they were maintained very well. Reason they resell. Records are usually available

Think "Let's see what this thing can do" for each time it was rented...

They have to be kept by the company for liability reasons. You should be able to get copies of every oil change or any other maintenance done to the vehicle.

This isn't about the Malibu is it? Used, rental, Chevy Malibu?

Good luck.

I used to drive rentals more than my own car. I can tell you without a doubt that I would marry a street walker before I would buy a used rental car.

This is how I see it. People dont have them long enough to neglect maintenance. Yeah they may have been raw dogged a bit but not allowing people under 24 or so to rent cars cuts out on most of the age groups that would be doing that anyway.

If I had it checked out and my mechanic friend told me to buy it, I'd buy it.

No. Doesn't matter what kind of car it is....they all get driven like they are rentals. Every rental car I've ever used felt like they had way more miles than they actually did.

A buddy of mine bought a 2007 Camry that was used as a rental for about 22,000 miles and it was a disaster.

If you are looking for a good deal for a sturdy car and don't care that much about image....find a used Impala or Fusion. They all seem to have 16" wheels, tan or white paint, and a maintenance schedule you can set your clock to. Fleet vehicles are okay but exercise caution with former rentals.
