I worked for OLOL blood bank in college. They charge for blood when they transfuse it and sell the surplus for a couple hundred a pint (ostensibly to cover their costs). When they had to buy it from for profit blood centers, it costed a lot more than a $150-200.

If less people donated blood and there were shortages, more critical patients would die, so donation helps people. If you want to donate blood, but hate capitalism, avoid donating at Red Cross (or other for profit, non-hospital blood centers) and donate directly to a hospital that has an ER and you at least cut out the middle man and his profit. If you want to take it a step further you can also direct your donation directly to a patient who has used blood and it will knock $ off their medical bill. If you don't know the name of someone that has used blood, ask the donor tech if they'll label it "direct donation" to someone that needs it.

I used to pull up names of people that needed blood and donated blood directly to them as often as my biology would allow. You have to wait 8 weeks between normal donations, but when directing your blood to a specific patient, you only have to wait 3 weeks as long as your HGB tests high enough.

I did it too often and the head nurse banned me from donating for a while, so I created a dummy account in the system and would donate in the name "Hank Hill" when out on blood drives. That account is probably still in the OLOL system.

Very creepy, like stalker-ish.

I have a cousin that got into a horrible accident and he died at the hospital because I didn't know his blood type needed for the transfusion. He never lost his spirit though, right up until the end he repeatedly told me to "be positive"

When you donate (not sell) your blood, all components are used for patients: RBCs, plasma, platelets. Plasma doesn't have the proteins which include the antigens, so type A/B/O +/- don't matter.

Your body is constantly making new red blood cells

Usually RBC's live for about 120'ish days

Red bone marrow is constantly making them

Not sure the point of ur post

You don't "just lose it" and thats that

Yes but this $320-570 you say the hospital charges per unit....does that include the cost of the blood bank in the hospital making sure the unit is the proper type and cross for the patient, them typing and crossing the patient, the nurse administering the blood(a nurse that has a patient receiving blood can't take as many patients as the other nurses because the blood patient needs more attention), the special tubing needed for the blood, the disposal costs of the blood bag and blood tubing after the blood transfusion is done?

Ah yes, the only bill the patient gets is the bill for blood, there are no extra charges for the nurses time, supplies, disposal or anything else.

A day of reckoning is comming to the medical industry and it can not happen soon enough.

That's not wholly correct because you didn't include the other half of the equation. Because AB people have both A & B antigens, their plasma doesn't include the A or B antibodies.

Therefore, AB plasma will not kill O/A/B/AB red blood cells if transfused, but (for example) O plasma will kill A/B/AB blood cells, since it has both A and B antibodies. You can only give O plasma to O people.

What doesn't matter with plasma is + or - status.

When I donate I do it at the hospital. That way I can direct it to a patient there (if I know someone needing it) and I get credit should I ever need some.

Is the receiving of blood based on credits achieved through giving?

I’m glad you started this topic. I enjoy giving blood (in a do-good kind of way), and never really thought about the fact that I’m letting Lifeshare or whatever prey on my emotions to make money from me. In hindsight, duh. I thought they were just calling me incessantly because I’m O-neg. I will donate directly at hospitals going forward.

I hate giving blood. It has the viscosity of maple syrup.

Every time I go to give blood, they are asking me to squeeze that ball like a little bitch because they can only keep needle in for so long and need a minimum volume to accept the donation.

I also have to fight with the stupid arse flobotomist (sp?) when giving vials because of my deeper veins. 5 pricks between both arms later with using butterfly needles, I tell them to go get fricked.

Isn't the Salvation Army better than Goodwill and Red Cross because their CEO doesn't make an insane amount of money like the CEOs of Goodwill and Red Cross?

Salvation Army and goodwill do provide services and jobs to poor and mentally disabled people. Plus, a lot of the stuff that gets donated would have been thrown away and in some ways helps to drive the economic cycle of consumerism. It’s not a total racket.

The Red Cross makes way too many phone calls. They got the hint when I put them on ignore.

They do need more drives during non business hours. The process is too long to donate on a workday.

The expenses for processing and handling the blood are what determines the price charged for it, when, when you buy a burger a McDonalds you pay for the burger, you don't get a breakdown of time and materials required to produce it.

Im not sure people know what a non-profit is. The buisness can sell and make money. In turn the owner and operator(which is not the buisness) dont make a penny off of it. No one profits, but that money goes directly back into the buisness for only buisness needs. Examples would be workers pay, new equipment, advertising ect ect. If you are into using used needles and stuff then idk what the problem is.

All males should consider giving blood as they get older, because the odds of having high iron are pretty good. It's actually rather good for you.

That's true. the recommended treatment for hemochromatosis is donating blood.

FYI for everyone who may not have known...
"Excess iron can poison organs, which can lead to conditions such as cancer, irregular heartbeat, and cirrhosis of the liver.

Symptoms are related to conditions that arise from iron overload such as diabetes, darkening of the skin, abnormal heart rhythm, or arthritis.

Iron can be dropped to safe levels by regularly removing blood from the body."
