Is giving blood a scam?

Every time something happens we are told "we need blood". "Go give blood."
So you give blood.
Blood in turn isn't given to those who need it. On average a hospital charges $320-570 per unit of blood. They buy this blood from Red Cross or other blood centers for $130-150 a unit.
So you are giving blood because you want to help, but all your are doing is just providing a commodity for free. You are guilted into helping, but there is a business being made.
At least the Plasma centers pay the crackheads $20.

I've thought about this as well....
Blood centers do obviously have costs but they're for profit, from donated blood, wtf. They should at least incentvize a little better than cookies and xxl tee shirt.

When I donate I do it at the hospital. That way I can direct it to a patient there (if I know someone needing it) and I get credit should I ever need some.

There are some costs in here though. Obviously it costs a lot to run a hospital, and someone has to administer the blood to the patient, and machinery is used. And none of the above is cheap. I dont think the hospital profits off of blood units. Blood centers on the other hand, I agree, you have basic low paid nurses and old equipment. The biggest cost I'd imagine is getting people in the door to donate, but they could pay $40 and probably cut 90% of their advertising and blood drives and be equally successful

Yes but this $320-570 you say the hospital charges per unit....does that include the cost of the blood bank in the hospital making sure the unit is the proper type and cross for the patient, them typing and crossing the patient, the nurse administering the blood(a nurse that has a patient receiving blood can't take as many patients as the other nurses because the blood patient needs more attention), the special tubing needed for the blood, the disposal costs of the blood bag and blood tubing after the blood transfusion is done?
Just saying...the hospital may not be making a huge profit off a unit of blood when you consider all the other factors.

it's a fricking racket, worse than the diamond industry. the red cross has convinced people to give away their most vital and precious resource for free.

Isn't the Salvation Army better than Goodwill and Red Cross because their CEO doesn't make an insane amount of money like the CEOs of Goodwill and Red Cross?
