You would be surprised how much money in tips you can make waiting tables or bartending at a good restaurant. I used to work a Friday night shift at a busy bar and would walk out with $300 plus my hourly pay every night.

Not everyone is 5'2. A 6'0-6'3 male is going to need at least 500 more calories a day than a shorter person. Not to mention how labor intensive these jobs are.

HUGE mistake. 100% return instantly plus time value of money.
I should have mentioned my company doesn’t match that high, but I don’t think I would contribute that much anyways.
Believe me I want to contribute as much as possible, but find me an affordable home around Nashville at my base salary - $80K for someone who has had little to no time to save for a down payment.
Keep in my mind the houses in this range are extremely attractive to all cash investment buyers.
I feel the need to save most of my money in a way that it could be applied to housing in the future, so I would much rather have higher compensation than good benefits.

What year?
2002. What I was doing back then paid about $6.00 more per hour than our warehouse folks. They are now making $15.00 or higher if I’m not mistaken.

They're 60-80k here, unless it's 40 years old. New ones are 100k. They are required by state law to have structural and environmental upgrades which inflates prices, plus it has to be barged up from Seattle.
They're pretty stout. Resale isn't bad at all. You can rent them out for $1500+ regardless of condition.

The ME generation will not be viewed fondly in history. Used social safety nets from the greatest to go to college for $1000, pulled up the ladder behind them, and now that they blew their retirement they raised SS/medicare while blocking a public option for non-boomers. Leadbrain or not, they are the worst gen.

Thinking one person needs to eat $800/month of rice, beans, and chicken is just as absurd, tbf
Dinner could be a salad(bag of spinach, tomatos, cucumber, boiled egg, bacon bits, blackened chicken strips(5 lbs Costco $14), red beanss with sausage and rice, pot roast(bought when on sale for like $7 a roast), mashed cauliflower, frozen broccoli, etc. Spaghetti and meatballs, tacos, grilled chicken breasts(big bag from Costco) etc We decide what we're eating for the week and buy accordingly. We buy whatever veggies are in season, look good and are on sale. We buy store brand stuff like shredded cheese. We don't eat a ton of premade meals. We meal prep whenever possible. This works for us.
What is an 18 yr old eating that costs $800 month? I got by on Mac & cheese, frozen pizza, grilled chicken, hamburgers, hamburger helper, ramen, chips, cereal etc

I'm pretty sure housing is relatively cheap in rural Oklahoma. I have a cattle farm, so I only stay on top of unimproved acreage values, not homes.
But every factory and the casino are all paying 18-20/hr which is pretty good for here.
And for the CDIB holders, the tribes give them free medical care and the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes will basically give people houses. I am not a CDIB holder but a lot of people I know here are.

This is such a load of horse shite. No two people can live off of $80 a week in groceries right now.

Ruth's Chris in BR is booked out 2 weeks in advance pretty much all the time, and they require all waitstaff to be full time employees. You just know those folks are making bank considering the prices of the food/drinks.
5-6 shifts per week bringing home $300+? That's a damn good annual salary.

My wife's nephew is renting a nice little house in the country for 600/month.

Yeah I don't know how New Orleans is anymore because I refuse to go back, but I know for sure there are professional waiters there that make a good living.
Posted on 5/22/22 at 3:32 pm to El Segundo Guy
Well unless he grows all his food out there in the country, that $5 a gallon gas is going to eat him alive.
Posted on 5/22/22 at 3:33 pm to Jsand43
He has chickens and hunts. But heck it's like 15 min to town.

A lot of hourly workers in the types of jobs OP described are going to start asking for raises very soon. Before the end of the year.
And that will be the beginning of the recession (if you want to pretend we aren't already in one).

I can roll up to any construction site and make 18+ an hour gen labor, day work, OT included with actual room for advancement if you get in on a good crew.
I think they can just see that your deal is shite. If you're the one complaining you can't find work, it isn't everyone else's fault. It's yours. Your incentives are not good enough to work for.

IDK. I've seen some insanity out there on the hiring side too.
"Must have 10 years of experience to apply" kind of nonsense for relatively low level jobs.
