I'm sure I will get shite on for this, but Knoxville doesn't feel like much of a college town to me either.
It's blowing up... population has increased significantly since I moved here over 6 years ago, and a lot of jobs which I'd agree make it feel less like a college town and more like a mid sized city.
But it's definitely not a shite hole or a bad place to raise a family.

Athens Ga should be high on list. It’s getting big, but overall is a nice, clean city. Downtown area is next to campus. Students can walk most places.
Athens is cool. It's not particularly nice/clean/safe. It has most of the Austin problems you mentioned on a smaller scale.

Knoxville and Columbia SC are probably the only good comps. I’d say Knoxville is better geographically and demographically but if it wasn’t kind of in/near the mountains it would be just another dump
I lived in Knoxville for seven years and am from Shreveport. Shreveport is on par with Baton Rouge as far as crime and urban decay. Knoxville is in another universe in comparison to Louisiana. Clean, low crime, friendly people in a beautiful area of the country.

COMO and Fayetteville are both nice places to have a family.

I have been to Knoxville 4 or 5 times and thoroughly enjoyed myself every time! Nothing against the city at all. It's sort of like Baton Rouge in that it's just too big of a city to feel like a traditional college town. Also, it's more of an urban campus which is the opposite of most SEC campuses.

It's a great city with bad areas

know this board likes to shite in Baton Rouge for “crime”, but the reality is that it doesn’t really affect anyone who lives in good areas
There’s no insulating yourself from BRLA crime. I know too many people who have been carjacked and or shot just driving around. The crime is bad.
That being said, I think BRLA offers a better quality of life compared to Starkville, Columbia (SC), Gainesville, and Tuscaloosa.

That depends on context. Worst is relative. Worst as far as crime? probably.

It's definitely an urban campus.. not in the "urban youth" sort but right next to downtown. No room to expand out so all the new buildings are replacing old ones and going vertical.

A tornado came through Starkeville recently, did $10 million worth of improvements.

Also--you ever been to the Wal-mart in Starkville? Trash capital of the world.
I was there in August when I dropped my child at State. I'll take the Starkville Walmart any day over the college drive walmart. I don't think we went in the same place.

lol. right.
Has he been in any walmart in baton rouge?

Gainesville is the worst. I hate that place.

So BR is full of unicorns and rainbows? Gimmee a break.
You name it, I've seen it.

Possible options for worse than BR are Starkville and Gainesville.
You misspelled Oxford. Bible-belt Mississippi is an abysmal place to live

Yes it is. LSU to tied with Mississippi State for the worst SEC school. The future of LSU and BR is not bright. All the desirable people who made these places tolerable are leaving
