re: Is Arizona a nice place to live?

lived in both places too, and while you are correct about UV exposure, no one on the planet would say Louisiana's weather is better than Arizona.
Humidity sucks, all the time.
You get up earlier in the summer to run, and you're fine
I had a lot of misery with Arizona heat in the summer. When you put off walking the dogs until 1130pm and the temperature is still between 95 and 100 degrees I didn't think that was okay.
I don't love humidity but the persistence of heat until the middle of the night blew my mind.
I wouldn't move back to either state year round. In the winter I could see living in Arizona but summer is a push or maybe worse.
Part of it was also all the goddamn weeds in desert scaped yards. In Louisiana I would just power through mowing the lawn and I was done. In Arizona I was either poisoning everything or weeding for hours a few times a month.

I always wondered that about Tucson. I know an interstate runs through it, but it seems so remote, like not much life would pass through it. Same thing I felt about Albuquerque. Is that the case?

Oddly, my wife considers the Phoenix symphony one of the best in the country. She has family there so we go.
it is a super nice symphony in a great building downtown (basically in the/attached to the convention center) with easy access from the light rail. have been to tons of shows there.

Tucson doesn't have much going on compared to Phoenix. Isn't a big city but has the disadvantages. Tempe, Scottsdale, Sedona, and Flagstaff are better lifestyle options. Flagstaff gets colder than you think in the winter though.

The Eagles loved the Phoenix Symphony.
Great concert.
Great concert.

Depends on what you like. I like to go out in the desert and shoot up old abandoned washers with high-powered weaponry all day so it suits me just fine.

One of my biggest regrets is not moving to Phoenix when we had the chance.

Your comment about getting a tan walking to your car was laughable (though you definitely need to watch out for the UV with all the blacktop and lack of cloud cover), and I don't agree about AZ being worse than the humidity, but this right here is 100% the truth. The weeds suck royally, go through Crossbow like crazy keeping them in check.

I mean, it makes a huge difference. New Orleans and South Florida are tremendously worse
I played golf in Phoenix in 103 weather, middle of the day. It was surface of the sun in the parking lot, not too bad out on the course, and felt 25 degrees cooler in the shade. Sat outside on veranda for lunch and felt better than it does when 85 and humid in the deep south. I have no idea how it affects others, but I was That Guy for a year afterwards telling everyone it is a dry heat.

He's probably 80, so I get it.

You don’t have to worry about cutting your grass.

I understand why lizards live in sunny Arizona. Why people do and call it home I'll never understand.

I live there does this answer your question?

I love living in Phoenix, but I can see how it wouldn’t be for everyone. Born and raised in south Louisiana, and it’s essentially completely opposite which appeals to me. Summers are hot but bearable. Rest of the year is amazing. Also, it’s drivable to many things (mountains, beach, Vegas, etc).

Been all over AZ for work. I liked Payson and Show Low. Didn’t like Quartzsite.

quote:Not true. Just spent the last week in Az, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, Prescott, Phoenix. Prescott is the best choice year-round IMO. Flagstaff can get 100 inches of snow and was pretty wet when I was up there even though the summer temps are enviable. Prescott is just a little warmer (80's, low 90's) but they get a whole lot less snow. Just seems like a wholesome, Western town.
Only place I could imagine living is Flagstaff. Everywhere else is basically uninhabitable from May to October.
If I could snap my fingers and move my small Virginia farm to somewhere outside Prescott, I'd do it. The amount of outdoor activities that are available are endless, Sedona's right there, etc.
Was gassing up the Jeep the other morning near Prescott and these three Can Am / Polaris's wheeled into the gas station, teenaged boys jumped out, gassed them up and headed down main street to the hills. Lucky frickers.

quote:Not really. I'm an hour south of Tucson, near the border, and we're generally 10-15 degrees cooler than Phoenix or Tucson. Elevation is key. And we have thunderstorms most afternoons between June and August, which also cools it down.
Everywhere else is basically uninhabitable from May to October.
Here's the forecast for the next week. It's hot, but not hell on earth:
