I work as the Director of HR for a Medium sized school District. Basically everyone stays clear...parents, teachers, classified employees, students...tough not to make people unhappy when you are in HR. They usually start texting to ask who is in trouble when my truck drives up.

I know 2 things about HR. They aren't there for you, they are there to protect the company, and anyone who reports third party sexual harassment should be drawn and quartered.

I came by to admit I spent a lot of time in HR when I was working. MY favorite time was in Round Lake, IL. I had 45 QC inspectors that worked for me. Since I was raised in the south, I referred to them as "My Ladies." it was 1978. What did I know? Anyhow, one of them took her complaint to HR, with the opinion that I was disrespecting her by using the word Lady when I referred to her.
We spent a half hour with the HR manager and I apologized. From that day forward, I referred to her as "Comrade". The HR manager thought it was a hoot.

My wife loves her HR career. She’s outpaced my engineering career, but my early money bought her some time. She’s unusual though, actually communicating is important to her.

Some of mine reported me for cursing. Hey, shite happens.
My only real problem was one HR bitch who must have thought she was a union rep. Made it hard as hell to get rid of people who needed getting rid of.

Depends on your top dog. If your HR person is supported by leadership and operates under his/her direction and philosophy, then HR can be a positive support for an organization. I’m finally getting to see that this year.

I don't work in HR but I've never really understood the training or education required to be an "HR professional".
I've actually seen some in the industry who have invented the term "HR Generalist" as a title. Not even sure what that means. Is there a degree required? Any type of certification or licensing board?
In most companies of any size it's a necessary overhead burden to have an HR person or staff as nobody else wants to deal with the problems. I guess that's job security.
