Is anyone familiar with Phantom Time Hypothesis?

Basically, the years (AD 614–911) never happened and the history during that time was fabricated by the catholic church.
I'm not as familiar with it as I'd like to be but it is very interesting and seems like it could have some gravity.
From Wikipedia:
At first it seems like a lot of work for not much gain until you look at the evidence:
Just something to think about. I'm gonna try to find some more research on the topic and dive deep over the holidays. It wouldn't be the craziest thing the church has ever done.

From Wikipedia:
quote:
The phantom time hypothesis is a historical conspiracy theory asserted by Heribert Illig. First published in 1991, it hypothesizes a conspiracy by the Holy Roman Emperor Otto III, Pope Sylvester II, and possibly the Byzantine Emperor Constantine VII, to fabricate the Anno Domini dating system retrospectively, in order to place them at the special year of AD 1000, and to rewrite history[1] to legitimize Otto's claim to the Holy Roman Empire.
quote:
According to this scenario, the entire Carolingian period, including the figure of Charlemagne, is a fabrication, with a "phantom time" of 297 years (AD 614–911) added to the Early Middle Ages
At first it seems like a lot of work for not much gain until you look at the evidence:
quote:
The scarcity of archaeological evidence that can be reliably dated to the period AD 614–911, the perceived inadequacies of radiometric and dendrochronological methods of dating this period, and the over-reliance of medieval historians on written sources
quote:
The presence of Romanesque architecture in tenth-century Western Europe, suggesting the Roman era was not as long ago as conventionally thought.
quote:
The relation between the Julian calendar, Gregorian calendar and the underlying astronomical solar or tropical year. The Julian calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar, was long known to introduce a discrepancy from the tropical year of around one day for each century that the calendar was in use. By the time the Gregorian calendar was introduced in AD 1582, Illig alleges that the old Julian calendar should have produced a discrepancy of thirteen days between it and the real (or tropical) calendar. Instead, the astronomers and mathematicians working for Pope Gregory XIII had found that the civil calendar needed to be adjusted by only ten days.
Just something to think about. I'm gonna try to find some more research on the topic and dive deep over the holidays. It wouldn't be the craziest thing the church has ever done.

That’s retarded. Literally window licker level.
You realize that there are contemporaneous sources for this period...yes?

Like putting a couple pennies in a billionaires wallet without them knowing.

I remember when this happened. The Asians negotiated the year count down HARD

The earth is only 600 years old

This is just nonsense. There are tens of thousands of artifacts that can be dated to this era.

There is Romanesque architecture present in 21st century Europe.
As with most conspiracy theories... this one is dumb.

does this mean that its actually 1721 and not 2018?

Mind blowing right?

Maybe we will have flying cars by the real year 2000.

I'm skeptical at this point as well but that part about the Julian calendar not syncing up correctly is hard to explain.

To the victor go the spoils, including writing history

Let's assume this is remotely a plausible theory. Wouldn't it be easy to compare timelines of nearby societies and their writings/artifacts/historical accounts as it relates to relations with Europe of this era? The areas of Egypt and North Africa had ongoing interactions with European states.

Can't decide on which is the appropriate tin foil hat.

Whens my real birthday?
Should July 4, 1776 really mean anything to us?
Did 9/11 really happen?
Why dont my parents love me?
I have so many questions

It predated the Phantom Menace hypothesis.

You would think yet I've never seen it done. You may have just added some evidence to support the theory.
