I've had general anxiety since I was a kid, and I also never realized it until I was about 30. I don't take anything for it, except marijuana. Doctor prescribed me lexipro for it, and I took it for a few weeks, and flushed it down the toilet. Made me feel like an empty husk.

Yes it’s real and nothing to take lightly. I have serve anxiety every time I drive because of a past car wreck. Lexapro has been a game changer.

I’m 45. Both my family practitioner and cardiologist said it’s created. Is it real, yes. I’m on Zoloft to help mine. You aren’t born with anxiety. Through life’s phases, stress and home life, it is manufactured.

Man, you got some bad medical care, but you also have gotten bad advice on it being manufactured.

Question is: Why do so many more people have mental health problems now than a few decades ago?

Social Media?
Raising youth to not experience struggle?
Food processing/preservatives?

15,000 years ago, if a man was having a panic attack around the communal fire, the rest of the tribe would smash his head in with a rock.

I get the worst attacks when I’m sleeping…

I wake up to a racing heart and negative, irrational, worrisome thoughts.

It’s hard to say it’s totally in one’s control when it wakes people up at night

I, like a lot of men, am an internalizer. I’m very proficient at pushing my anxiety and worries down, only for them to build up in the ole subconscious and storm the castle when defenses are down.

Have I ever felt anxiety? Many, many times.

Has it ever had any long-term effects on my life? Nope.

Have I used it as an excuse to score medical weed? Yep.

Real anxiety is very real. The real issue is whether generalized anxiety disorder is real or just normal stress/fear over normal life issues.

I do think social media exaggerates normal fears/reservations/stress for younger kids these days, and it is an issue that really needs to be talked about.

There's nothing wrong with your question. Yes anxiety is real and if you have never experienced it on a chronic level then it is definitely hard to understand how it works. Hence your question. I started having anxiety in high school and it escalated in college to the point I couldn't leave my bedroom. Before this I thought those with anxiety or depression were the "soft" type or "attention seeking." I can assure that this just isn't the case in most circumstances. There can be a genetic component to predispose you to anxiety but it is usually triggered but something environmental. The specific reason is different for everyone.

I’m a pretty high functioning autist, but anxiety is just part and parcel of being alive. It’s weird. Most social situations are no problem, and I’m very outgoing, but every once in a while, it’s like my brain switches into the wrong gear setting and everything becomes terrifying for a few minutes. I find a lot of anxiety stems from when I have a job to go from point A to point B with very little guidance on how to do so. When I have to think creatively through situations with a ton of variables and unknowns with little structure to cling to, anxiety will leave me stuck in a loop, unable to commit to a single strategy or path.

I also have issues where in my brain, there is a set order I have to do things in.
For example:
I’m hungry, so I need food. I don’t have food at home, so I need to go somewhere. To go somewhere, I need to take a shower and get dressed. However, I don’t have clean pants. To get clean pants, I need to get them out of the dryer. I have to go outside to access the laundry room. Therefore, I must be dressed to access the laundry room. I must shower before I get dressed…

This creates a logic loop where anxiety will literally have me spinning for hours because my brain can’t accept the idea of walking to the goddamn laundry room in pajamas because I have some sort of weird anxiety about neighbors seeing me in pj’s. I don’t know why this is a thing or where it comes from, but it definitely feels real to me.

Anxiety creates this sorta paralysis by analysis feedback loop where your brain basically eats itself and builds its own panic for no discernible reason.

Any kind of THC product can induce the same feelings I had when I was suffering with Panic Disorder only its usually mild. My rule of thumb when indulging is take one hit of flower and wait 20 minutes to see how it rolls with me or with edibles take half the recommended single dose and wait an hour. Panic attacks with THC is pretty common but its something that you just have to aware of about yourself and be cautious when using.

This is similar to what would happen to me.

Anxiety runs in my family, but I never had an issue with it until this past year. Something traumatic happened to me, and it must've triggered something. I began to have bad anxiety followed by a panic attack. Even happened when I would go workout.

One day I was coming home from work and my whole body started tingling and feeling numb and it went up into my face. I thought I was having a stroke while driving on the interstate.

Panic attacks are nothing to play around with. I got on low dose medicine for the anxiety a couple months ago and have been great ever since.

Ok...here's the irony...it is both real, and literally in people's heads. Anxiety is the result of an overactive amygdala. So...part of your brain gets overstimulated, and anxiety is the result. Since the amygdala is part of your brain...it is literally all in your head, but is is physiological in nature.
