No aircraft will be able to launch any missiles at a carrier group within 10 minutes of a fight starting due to the massive advantage we will have in the air, which will in turn level all land a sea based threats to the carrier. The battle group acts as a shield for the carrier to get planes up in the air.

I speaking more of the 400KM range land based ASM's China currently has in their inventory as well as Iran (purportedly)

You shoot them enough off in sufficient numbers and you overwhelm current ABM defenses. Only thing that may work would be a EMP burst provided the missiles aren't resistent.

Currently deployed Chinese Land-based cruise missiles

Well, then you park the carrier strike group 450 km off the coast and send in the F-18s to take out the ASMs. You don't have to get close to shore to send the air wing in to attack. It's kind of the point of a carrier strike group.

You'd still have to worry like hell about those diesel-electric hunter killers that China likes, though.

You think they only have anti-ship capabilities?

Furthermore, current American warfighting doctrine is to wait for the enemy to attack first. A lot of people will die in those first moments as we are immediately defensive. CBG's will be one of the most important initial targets of any advanced enemy. When war breaks out, the enemy's best weapons and tactics will be deployed to negate CBGs.

I'm gonna say you ain't touching a carrier with one bullet or rocket. Fully deployed they are the strongest force the world has ever seen.

Only a nuclear strike would be effective

True. Most people in this thread have no idea how much firepower one single aircraft carrier possesses.

Just two or three U.S. carrier battle groups could defeat the entire North Korean air force, and a third of their ground forces, with conventional weapons alone.

Served in the Navy big dog. I'm very aware of the firepower and capabilities of carriers.

There was a point in time when people thought Pearl Harbor couldn't be attacked because it was too far and the harbor too shallow for torpedoes.

A motivated enemy will find a way. In the case of Pearl Harbor, it was simply adding wooden fairings to the backs of torpedoes.

Again, if you fill the skies with missiles, no countermeasures or aircraft will be able to stop them all. Having the advantage of "First Strike" means we won't be able to hit them until they have launched their attack first.

We aren't talking about NK here...We are talking about a WWIII against one or two nations with advanced militaries

I've heard that China and Russia both have militaries which are as strong as we are.

I'm not sure what you're argument is here. I was just stated capabilities. Russia would be the only threat to the U.S. Navy, because they have aircraft capable of getting the first shot off, while jamming the weapons platforms of our fighters.

If you're talking about a nuclear exchange then nobody ultimately wins. Our atmosphere would rain down radioactive isotopes which would contaminate water and food sources, killing survivors for years after the fallout. A nuclear exchange would worldwide genocide anyway you slice it.

The thing that always surprises me about that chart is how even the UK pretty much doesn't even try either.

The U.K. forged the way for mordern Naval fleets and shaped the modern world....they've done their part and can protect themselves from most enemies.

Check out To Rule the Waves for a great read about how the Royal British Navy shaped our world.

I have read where the British Navy, while seriously reduced in size, still has the best anti-submarine warfare capabilities in the world. Just as good-if not better-than ours. I would like for those of you in the know to comment on this and let me know whether I am right or wrong. I enjoy discussing this kind of stuff.

I don't know much about them currently but I do know they are the reason the Sun Never Sets on the British Empire.

It is the ability of the Navy and Air Force to "project power" anywhere on the planet on short notice, and that includes moving massive heavy combat ground forces from the Army (and yes Marines, but I already lumped them in with the Navy) on relatively short notice to any hot spot in the world

Our ability to to move massive heavy ground forces quickly has eroded substantially since the end of the Cold War. Yes, we have rapid deployment forces ready to go within 24 hour notice. But those forces are airborne infantry divisions, not heavy maneuver divisions. It would take us several weeks to move a heavy division anywhere.

America sure as hell isn't powerful because of our submarines. Here's a photo of one of our newest multi-billion dollar subs being out run, out flanked, out maneuvered ... by a goddam dolphin. Your tax dollars at work:
