Actually, our culture (as fricked as it is) is probably our biggest power asset. Freaking Baywatch made more people around the world bow down to "America" than a whole squadron of f-18s.

If I had to give up either Hollywood or the aircraft carriers, I'd fish for amberjack around the carriers and feed that money to the Les Grossman's of the world.

Today, perception is worth more than reality.

Aircraft carriers for the cameras.

Subs for the those in the know. Nuclear deterrence is a powerful thing.

The Navy is the most powerful branch when it comes to hardware.

Those arguments typically center on the AF owning 2 of the 3 legs of the Nuclear Triad.

The 2 legs that everyone knows their exact location. Nobody knows where the 3rd part of the triad is until missiles start flying.

Furthermore, only the AF can provide rapid mobility and the ability to provide rapid strike capability anywhere on the planet.

I know you're an AF homer but jeesh. There are carrier battle groups located in every major playing field in the world.

Willingness to go into insurmountable debt to support the world's largest military budget. It's easy to have the biggest, baddest, military regime in the world when the U.S overspends the way it does.

1.U.S spending 598 billion
2.China 145 bil
6.Russia 43 bil

Combined world total $1563 billion.

we are powerful because we have tactically places nukes all over the world that can be a preemptive strike anywhere in the world or be a counterstrike in a matter of moments. Basically meaning game over for anyone who wants to frick with us.

It is, but many of those are down for maintenance at any given time. Last year at one point there was only 1 aircraft carrier deployed.

Carriers are the threat that you see...Subs are the threat you don't see...so I would say Naval Aviation and Surface presence "projects" to the world our sea power and capabilities...but what the silent fleet can do to a foe....is remarkable...and I'm not even just talking about the nuclear deterrence factor..

Carrier Battle Groups would be the first casualties of a third world war.

Their every move is tracked via spy ships and satellites.

In the earliest moments of an all out war, 1000's of missiles will be fired with the goal of knocking out a carrier.

Meanwhile our sub force will be WRECKING shite

The days of CBG's ruling naval warfare are over. At least in terms of major world war events.

CBG's remain relevent in littoral combat situations like you see today in Syria and what we have seen in Yugoslavia, Iraq, and Afghanistan

I've said it before and I'll say it again. In a true Anti-Access, Area Denial (A2/AD) environment, the carriers will not be as useful as you guys think. They will be stiff-armed by long range anti-ship missiles that can be fired both from on land and from aircraft. Even when they can launch aircraft, the aircraft they launch all have a limited range and payload.

No aircraft will be able to launch any missiles at a carrier group within 10 minutes of a fight starting due to the massive advantage we will have in the air, which will in turn level all land a sea based threats to the carrier. The battle group acts as a shield for the carrier to get planes up in the air.

Carriers. /Thread.

America is the only country in the world that can project force with its Navy. Even at the height of the Cold War Soviet strategy centered around destroying Americas carrier fleet.

carrier battle groups

If that's not impressive and enough to scare the shite out of anyone with ill intentions, then I don't know what is. Plus you don't even see the 3 or 4 fast attack subs in front of the battle group.
