Carriers for conventional war and exerting influence. Nuclear subs guarantee mutual assured destruction with the Soviets.

Carriers.

Most countries realize we won't use nukes as a first strike weapon.

This would be my serious answer.

We're not using nukes again until the aliens make their presence known, but the carriers are an every day threat.

A British naval officer once said a few years ago that IF every country in the world attacked the US at once they wouldn't reach our shores because of our naval superiority.

It is the ability of the Navy and Air Force to "project power" anywhere on the planet on short notice, and that includes moving massive heavy combat ground forces from the Army (and yes Marines, but I already lumped them in with the Navy) on relatively short notice to any hot spot in the world.... No other nation on earth has that capability.... Although, because of the current administration, our capabilities are way below par right now because of neglect, incompetence, appeasement and complete lack of competent foreign policy or national security strategy. We are like the University of Texas football right now... An extremely rich and powerful program that for the last 7.4 years has suffered under incompetent Curly Hallman-like coaching.......

We had a great thread with the topic being this. There were 2 scenarios with the whole world against us.

A) Everyone has a year to prepare and mobilize and then the war starts

B) The war starts tomorrow with no prep.

SSBN's primary role is as a nuclear deterrent. Seems to be working so far.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. In a true Anti-Access, Area Denial (A2/AD) environment, the carriers will not be as useful as you guys think. They will be stiff-armed by long range anti-ship missiles that can be fired both from on land and from aircraft. Even when they can launch aircraft, the aircraft they launch all have a limited range and payload.

The reasons the Chinese and Russians don't have carriers is because they don't view themselves as needing to have a true power projection force. They focus on having just enough threat to create a hegemony in their region. Look at what the Chinese are doing in the South China Sea and the Russians did in Ukraine. Extended their spheres of influence without the need for carriers that we pay in excess of $10B each just to purchase, let alone the "life-cycle" costs of operating and maintaining them.

The carriers will go the way of the battleships in the next 20-30 years.

Depends on the scenario. No one service or element can project true power on their own, nor should they be able to. Arguments could be made that the Air Force projects the most force. Those arguments typically center on the AF owning 2 of the 3 legs of the Nuclear Triad. Playing that out, the argument is the fear of direct conflict between true nuclear powers is what has kept a WWIII from happening. It's why we fought proxy wars in Korea and Vietnam and in both conflicts we had very strict ROE to prevent provoking overt actions against either the Russians or Chinese.

Furthermore, only the AF can provide rapid mobility and the ability to provide rapid strike capability anywhere on the planet.

You'r talking hypotheticals and what may be but the question is what is. The answer today is carriers.

You think A2/AD environments are hypothetical? Trust me, they exist today.

The level of training is bar none but the mix of people and money is why we are the strongest. Consider the mix of fighting force that we have in America. The shear will of the American people to fight is what also makes us great. Hell even the gays want to own guns or go to war after Sunday.

We're a pretty unrully bunch.

Noboday said they didn't exist. I only said that the the power of the US isn't based off of it's capabilities in such environments. Again, you're posing hypotheticals. The US is as powerful as it is because of the carriers they have used since WWII
