Maybe fleeting happiness but lasting as a society?

Our devices allowing us to access social media seems to have a negative or at best neutral effect on happiness (FB syndrome, keeping up with others, etc). Went to Yellowstone awhile back and most people weren’t in the moment but staring through their phones like zombies to get the perfect picture for IG.

And I don’t see how tech has lightened my work load from 20 years ago. If anything it is more.

It makes it easier for people to see how unhappy they can be

Try to watch a full day of standard definition TV and tell if you're happier when you're done.

More information is available to you now than ever before, but ignorance was bliss.

If you let social media or any technology make you depressed, you have bigger issues to worry about.

T.K. Whipple wrote this about the frontiersmen:

quote:

“All America lies at the end of the wilderness road, and our past is not a dead past, but still lives in us. ... We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers. What they dreamed, we live, and what they lived, we dream.”

thousands of years our ancestors lived without technology as we know it today. it feels good to go out in to the wilderness and connect with what we are programmed to do. people nowadays go live in the mountains for a fricking vacation. that used to be the reality of life. we have it too easy.

It makes people depressed because they follow people who give the appearance of a lavish lifestyle. Great body, sexy spouses, vacations, nice cars, etc. But if they would get off that obsession and look at what they have in their own lives, they would be happier. Everyone wishes they could have a nicer lifestyle, but they take for granted what they have. I’ll use myself as an example. I don’t make a lot of money, my girlfriend doesn’t make a lot of money, we live in a crappy rental house, I drive a bit of an older truck, she drives a POS, the list goes on. But, the past two years have been pretty awesome. We’ve made a life for ourselves, and we’ll be married soon. I’m training for a job that I want, she’s studying for her CPA and we’re both saving up for a house. In a few years, we’ll be better off. But if all we did was sulk around and compare ourselves to everyone else, we wouldn’t being enjoying where we’re at now. 20 years from now, when we’re trying to pay off a mortage, put kids in college and save for retirement, we’ll look back at when we were in our 20’s, living in that crappy rental house, watching movies and drinking cheap wine. It’s nothing spectacular, but we’re doing this together. No one on social media can give us that.

Sometimes I get irate if my email freezes up or something and it takes 30 seconds extra to send an email as a result. This is ridiculous considered how quickly you can send a message compared to a letter back in the day. But, you get hooked on the speed of things or current technology and it becomes the new baseline.

I don't really think technology exists to attempt to make people happier though.

For too many it has created the 24/7 workweek, and those that live in that world brainwash themselves into thinking that since they are at home its not really working. At one time most workers were done when they left the office now the everything you could do in the office follows you into your car and home. You are on the cell phone as soon as you get in the car to drive home. Instead of spending time with your kids after dinner you have to check Email one more time, then you have to respond to a Emails, but it only takes a minute. You go to bed , but instead of talking to your spouse, you see the phone and have to check it again. It is a ever expanding circle that will eventually dominate all your waking hours.

But how does the quality of the available information compare?

In the olden times, it seemed like it took discipline and/or expertise (and expense) to acquire a forum.

It seems more difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff now.

I know I'm crotchety.

We are living in the technological revolution, much like the industrial revolution before. I don't know that it affects our happiness as much as our behaviors, and happiness is a difficult measure to go by. Happiness fluctuates for all sorts of reasons.

Technology has made it more difficult to escape from job responsibilities for a few hours and go to a bar, casino, or whorehouse.

I bought my gf a clit stimulator for her birthday, and it certainly made her happier.

Perhaps, TOO much happier.

On second thought, it was a stupid gift, and I should throw it away immediately.
