Is a chiropractor actually a doctor or just a glorified massage therapist?

I have long thought chiros were quacks but after straining my back I am wondering if I should visit one

they are the latter, but it works ... a good one will have various methods, not just the 'neck jerk' to either side ... in fact, a good one won't use that method at all ...

Joe Rogan doesn’t have a high opinion of them, and I get all my health advice from him.

Definitely not Doctors. Not even close.

Why would straining your back change your mind? Just go to a real doctor.

Real doctor mentioned visiting a chiro I have just always had a negative view of them.

Look for one who is ART, graston, etc. They employ real techniques vs just cracking.
So many are con artists that they give ones who are legit a bad name.

Last time I messed up my back I went to a medical masseuse and as flaky as she was she fixed me in one session. It cost me $80 cash but it was worth every cent.

But there are definitely some who are peddling pseudoscience, dangerously at times (anti-vaccines). I got into an argument with one who purported to be able to effectively treat things like Autism and other neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders as he “specialized” in child and infant (yes infants) chiropractic care.

Are these certifications? Honest question. I’ve heard more good stories than bad but the bad keep me away as my spine is not something I’m gambling with.

Not doctors at all. If I'm not mistaken, major, accredited universities do not offer programs in this. That should be the first red flag.

They are not medical doctors who are trained in the MD process. Chiropractors go to chiropractic colleges and receive Doctors of Chiropractic degrees ( D.C.) I believe the program may be 4 to 5 years, not certain. The most renowned is Palmer College in Iowa. I believe there may be another school in Atlanta.

My parents always said that chiropractors would paralyze a person based on hearsay I think. Whatever you want to label them doesn’t matter to me. My experience is that the one I finally chose for lower back issues worked miracles on my back. Sidle in like a crab, walk out erect........was my experience. She used the vertebrae cracking methods, electrical stimulation, and muscle massage as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the only "doctorate" degree that cannot be attained at a major University?
If it was a legitimate degree I don't see why there wouldn't be a program at LSU, Tulane, Etc

Not sure why universities don't offer a curriculum in chiropractic.
I believe over time the practice has become more legitimized and accepted by the medical community and have been certified by the medical governing boards.
I believe they can now prescribe certain medications.
In the last quarter century they have become more progressive and professional both in appearance and presentation of their services. There is less of the sleazy back room feel to the profession with the older doctors professing to be able to cure all ailments from babies to elderly.
Their acceptance by world class athletes and Olympic teams has also enhanced their image.
They are knowledgable within their field and can treat orthopedic conditions , but should be cautious in going beyond that. Sometimes the chiropractor must refer to a neurosurgeon for further treatment.

John Hymel is legit. He works with the LSU athletics program, as well as Olympic athletes. I see him and he's never once popped or manipulated me. I found it to be a lot more similar to physical therapy/rehab, to be honest. He did dry needling in my hardcore knots and then worked with me on a weekly basis to correct the way I was using certain muscles that resulted in overuse of some, and underuse of others. It was extremely beneficial and I actually need to start going again.
