It is also one of the best college towns in America. Good bars and restaurants, fun downtown, vibrant and energetic, lots of white collar professionals, etc. It’s a nice place to live.
Liberal conclaves in conservative areas tend to be pretty awesome, honestly.

Uhhhhh, this might be a stretch.
As far as college towns are concerned, it's not even close to Madison (aka The People's Republic of Madison), but then if you open it up to the rest of the Midwest you've got Minneapolis and their insanity, Chicago, which hasn't had a Republican mayor in 90 years and is blue as blue gets, the union stronghold of Detroit, and so on.

Spent some time in Coralville, right next door. Iowa City is a college town, for sure. The winters are typical for he northern plains. Cold weather is imported directly from the arctic, and you'll see lots of snow. Learn how to drive in it if you haven't already, and you won't have any problems with that.
People are very nice. Salt of the earth. Crime is low. U of I is a legitimate school with the full compliment of disciplines--Law, Medical, Research, and Football.
The food is what it is. You'll find nice restaurants, particularly steakhouses and probably a few biergartens, but it's not like the bounty that is the South or the Coasts.
You bow hunt? You'll like the hunting. Fishing is limited, predictably.
You'll see more cornfields than you have in your life.
It's not a bad place to move.

Average high is in the 60s by April.
Average. There were 5 days in April below freezing this year. My previous company had a facility there. I know. It is cold.
Someone moving from the South is going to think a high of 60 is not warm.
Why are folks trying to debate this? Arizona winters are very nice. Accshualllly Arizona winters average…

I’ve not been to Iowa City, but I have been to Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and a couple of other smaller towns.
Dec-Feb suck weather wise but the other 9 months more than make up for it. Seen plenty baws up that way so I’d have to imagine good hunting/fishing is highly likely. The people are just about the nicest, collectively, that I’ve come across.

There is very little at all in Iowa but massive amounts of farm land.
This times a thousand. The next time you drive across the spillway, imagine being at ground level and all of that in every direction being (depending on the season) 6 ft tall corn or 18" of snow/frozen farm land. Now multiply the distance by 10 and you have I-95 across Iowa, interrupted only by Des Moines (~pop of Baton Rouge) and Iowa City (~pop of Lake Charles).

Buy a period, Cormac.
OP, hard pass.
Nobody moves North to retire, and you aren't that far from it.

If you’re moving from Utah some of it will be familiar.
Deer hunting is outstanding in Iowa.
Pheasant hunting has made some of a comeback.
Duck hunting is spotty.
Fishing depends the Mississippi River would have decent walleye fishing in spots.
Iowa City itself is ok and will feel very familiar and white like Utah without all the Mormons.

People are mentioning the cold your user name has Utah in it
Iowa cold and Utah cold are different it's not as nice as Utah up in the higher elevation it's much cleaner air less humidity Iowa is very windy and the wind is not refreshing like it might be in the mountains then you also are on lsu board which makes me think you have southern connections food might be a challenge it's a real meat potatoes farm food German /Scandinavian Culture
Yeah, Utah cold is very bearable, but I lived on the benches (house for sale if anyone wants really nice house overlooking SLC). On the benches it is very windy and Utah has no real spring. I got snow deep into May almost every year I lived there.
Food, can't be worse than Utah. Beyond bland up there. I just spent Thurs - today back in LA. Got my fill of seafood boudin balls, crab benedict, etc. I really do love food from Lafayette and North Shore.
It is either Iowa City or Tyler Tx. Both are better than Big Spring Tx

The coldest I've been in was roughly -18 in Nebraska. It was brutal. The high was 0. It only lasted a few days though
I have worked in Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota during the winters. Nothing is worse than Wyoming. -40 with 60mph winds. Total suckage.

Weighing 2 offers right now. If I indeed take the Iowa city job, you and I will talk. I am leaning that way. That job gets me out of refining and into mid-stream which is much more laid back.

Was it the Iowa or Iowa State football stadium that got hit by a tornado during a game?

I moved to neighboring Illinois 20 years ago. Pluses and minuses. Having Chicago 50 miles from me is perfect. Regarding Iowa, it’s a fairly conservative state, great hunting, and that’s about it. Your typical Iowan resembles someone with Asperger’s. They have no social filter when they speak. Lot of them can be smug know it alls for some reason. Now go North to Minnesota and forget what you hear about Minnesota nice. Passive aggressive is a way of life up there.

I'd live in Iowa 100 times out of 100 over Illinois.

Coming from LA I would say no brainer. From Utah....it would have to be a considerable pay raise.
