I haven't heard of either of these, but it's just further evidence that people have no idea how to handle controversies.

It is always incredible to me the mental gymnastics it requires to get to that point but it's also always funny

The cake pop is interesting because of the mob mentality and how w used to do stuff like that in the early days of the OT.
The WV couple drama is annoying and not really worth going into. Just is all over and I see everyone talking about it on Instagram and Tiktok mostly. Which my old arse shouldn't be on. I need to stick to the dying internet forums.

If its me and I have a self serve service and someone fails to pay $4 for an item I just toss it up to folks being folks. When I was a kid I had a honor system tomato stand every summer and almost everyone paid but occasionally someone wouldn't and at 10 I simply accepted that in a world where most people will pay for a tomato there are some who won't. My take away was that the vast majority of people will do the right thing even when no one is looking...this is kind of an example of that...apparently the old boy made an honest mistake, admitted he should have paid more attention, and made it right when called out about it. I am just wired differently but to me that is a testament to what is right in the world, not what is wrong....

Am I the only one that had to Google what the heck a cake pop is?
Posted on 9/1/26 at 9:11 am to Napoleon
But since so many never heard of it.

Now there was a video of a family stealing every item in a farm stand like that and those people are the kind that need to be witch hunted. But they were masked usual suspects.

If you are online on social media two things are all over your feed. Dalton and Sako and the Florida cake pop.
None of that is on my feed and I am thankful for it.

First, their business model is stupid. Second, they got way too angry originally over it. Third, doubling down shows no self awareness or marketing sense. They could have told collabed and gone viral if they just used it as a way to promote their whacky business practice.
The only stupid thing about their business model is making an issue out of someone stealing and apparently doubling down on it when the person does all they can to make it right. Having a self serve business model is not in and of itself stupid....from experience I know for a certainty that the vast majority of people will do the right thing even when someone is not looking...the occasional miscreant is no reason to not trust the majority if you don't want to have someone present at all times.
We have 2 similar situations near us. One is owned by a woman with a GORGEOUS field of wildflowers alongside a major road. She does flower arrangements and sets them in an open shed and you pay what you think is fair. I have asked her and she says most people over pay and almost no one pays nothing.
The other is a self serve bait shop that sells herring. I actually know these people fairly well....they have a HELLUVA business and have had for YEARS....they have made a lot of money so I trust their business sense. They have a self serve bait tank that is open 24-7. The owners have told me numerous times that they almost never have anyone NOT pay - they have people who kill all the bait by mishandling it which is a major problem but even those people pay LOL. If they only sold herring while they were there they'd either have to be there a lot more or fisherman wouldn't have access to bait after hours.

In what world does "Help yourself" labeled on an unattended setup of something mean anything other than "Feel free to take one, for free"?

I'm guessing that a cake-pop is like a Little Debbie on a stick?

You take a cake. Smash it. Roll it into a ball. Then add icing and that's a cake pop.
Or is what your kids beg for at Starbucks.

That's it? They don't put rum in it or nothing?

Some put rum in it. Some put other liquids.
Nothing special. Like really dense cake the size of a tootsie pop

They had a big opportunity for positive public attention after he apologized for his mistake and paid despite them making the food seem free in the first place.
“Help yourself” means take what you want, it’s not what you use to advertise products to be purchased.
They should have changed the message and invited him back for a box of complimentary treats and a positive photo op.
They put him on blast for $4 and their own mistake in the first place. The backlash that they received is what they wanted him to experience so they got what they deserved. Treat others as you want to be treated and they weren’t willing to give a little grace over $4.

My first thought is this is going to bring the local authorities and, much worse, the eye of the IRS onto their business. That, and not the mob, will be when the real fun starts.
