IP Mansfield is currently 50 million in the hole due to some major recent issues.
That’s IP’s baby and they obviously are willing to invest in it.

No only paper mills do that. This is just a box plant.

That kind of loss could be the final nail in the coffin for the area.

It pretty much was the kill shot for both Camden, AR and Bastrop, LA when IP closed the mills there. I was told by a guy who worked at the Bastrop mill that a competitor made a reasonable offer for that mill but IP refused it and opted to offshore those jobs. If true, IP should be damned.

Right, because no foreign nation imposed tarrifs on American exports until Trump.

Unfortunately this is trend that's been going on since the 2000's and there's really much you can do about it as long as everything goes digital.

As a kid, I knew a lot of people in small towns in North Louisiana and Mississippi who made a decent living working at paper mills.

My understanding is Roy O Martin is looking to buy and move into the area to expand their business. Might save it somewhat.

What would they do with it? Building materials or cardboard?

I don’t think buying that particular plant, building another plant for their uses as well as the timberland. More plywood and wood I would imagine.

buy the surrounding timberland sure, but I doubt they’ll buy the plant considering they’re still trying to get the one in Texas going.

Trump’s America.

And I mean that seriously. A business such as a paper mill or some other factory, if it doesn’t have a sufficient market for its products locally can look to expand its markets in other areas or overseas. U.S. wood products are exported every day. But with the Trump tariffs, and foreign tariffs, foreign markets are closed.

This is one way that tariffs can actually harm US manufacturing, rather than “bring it back.” If your new or existing plant can only sell locally, it may not be able to survive. Expect these upside-down trade policies to shutter more manufacturing and farming operations due to the closure of foreign markets.

I don't know if any Trump policy had anything to do with this plant closing, seems kind of quick and more likely to have been in the works for some time.

That said anyone who thinks raising taxes (tariffs are nothing if not a tax) won't hurt the economy they are foolish. It seems like Trump and company have actually said it was likely to cause some pain to start with. Manufacturing is not returning to the United States in any sort of numbers no matter what is done....that ship has sailed and was driven away by Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton and the American people's love for cheap products....it ain't coming back no matter how much we raise taxes.
