The business only gets half of that money. The state gets 5 and the business gets 5 on a 10 tag.

Not sure how much they look to the west but Tx finally did away with it starting in September. Maybe that helps the chance of it passing.

Still have to do emissions testing if in certain parishes though.

From July 2018 WBRZ news:

The Environmental Protection Agency has deemed the air quality in five parishes, East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Ascension, Livingston and Iberville Parishes, to be more closely monitored by the Department of Environmental Quality. That's attributed to a few factors, including population and industrial plant presence and it's why those five parishes require an emissions test. The inspection stickers in those parishes cost $18 a year and two-year inspection issuance is not allowed. The increased cost offsets the cost of necessary air quality emissions testing equipment each station is required to use.

For the most part, the cost is divided three ways: $4.75 to the station performing the inspection; $4 goes to Louisiana State Police; and $1.25 goes to the Office of Motor Vehicles. The extra $8 cost in the five parishes goes to the emission testing. The revenue is used to fund the operating budget of each agency.

That revenue adds up. Louisiana State Police's portion of one year stickers and CVI stickers is about $3.5 million. LSP's portion of two-year stickers is about $8.75 million. The OMV's portion of CVI and one-year stickers is about $1.2 million and its portion of two-year stickers is about $2.7 million.

As someone in the auto business, I’m on the fence about them. Failing a vehicle for a check engine/emission light is just stupid. THAT is a joke and should be removed to get a sticker. Im saying that knowing it will take away business from me. On the other hand, I think people here don’t understand how unsafe a lot of cars on the road are. Too many people are careless or just plain lazy taking care of 70 MPH 1/2 ton death machines they live out of a majority of their life. BALD tires, no wiper blades, no head or tail lights, no brakes. Too many examples I could give of cars that DO NOT need to be on the road. That would be my focus for stickers but the punishment would be harsher if your shite is unsafe for the roads.

South Carolina used to require inspection stickers, we did away with them probably 30-35 years ago, maybe a bit more.

I see no difference on the roads, other than traffic increased.

When I moved to Ky. I had to start paying yearly property tax on my vehicles that I had already paid off in Louisiana.
This year was 230$.
I’d be happy to pay for a sticker. Lol

What's wild is that we have a place where I live that only does inspection stickers. That's it. There's no inspection happening, but you pay your 20 and yet a sticker. I don't understand how it stays afloat. Building is old, no frills. Surprised electricity is run to the place.

The most ridiculous argument ever. If a business needs $20 inspection stickers to survive, they don’t need to be in business. AND citizens should not be required to pay for inspections purely to keep those businesses afloat.

In NJ the inspections are free, but must be done. That would make more sense if the purpose was to actually inspect vehicles

Which is preferable imo. I've lived 1/3 mile from the beach before.

Every time I talk to one of the owners of a shop that does inspections, they always whine that they barely clear expenses doing them. My response is, then why do it? That's usually when they stand there drooling through the 3 missing teeth in the front of their mouth.

I got certified to inspect years ago when I worked at a dealership. I haven’t done that in a long time, but still drop by and chat with them time to time. They do make a percentage off them. It’s roughly 45%. Then another 40% goes to the state police and the rest to the DMV. The last time it was proposed to do away with them, the state said an average ownership of a vehicle was 5-7 years. So when you registered your vehicle, you would pay a one time fee of $50-$70. Didn’t matter if you owned it a year or 20, that was the “inspection”. Then, the state was gonna hire more troopers to do “inspections”, meaning they would patrol normally only pulling over vehicles to do “inspections” on the side of the road. When I hear it that way, I’d rather gladly stop by my local place and let them put a sticker on once every two years then randomly headed to work on morning to get stopped for 15 minutes while a trooper does a roadside inspection. DOT already does that on commercial vehicle pretty hard in my area. It’s almost a guarantee they get a ticket every time for something minor (one small marker light out, rock chip in windshield, ect).

Money my friend...they won't get rid of it.

I saw an article saying LSP isn't against it because they're getting extra cash from an extra tax on vapes.

If they dont get rid of it then they need to require these frickers to be open on Saturday so working people can get their money extortion tag.

I've been told the shops have to keep those bays open only for inspections only. Paying rent on that space can't be all that profitable.

As always, I could be wrong.

This might actually be the year it happens. LSP has found a new avenue to replace the revenue from this scam.

That is straight up theft. I would drop off a bag of pennies for payment. Taxes are out of control.

In your younger days. I member mine too.

Probably when BRPD and the EBRSO weren't terribly understaffed and dealing with more important things.
