“Insert Name” has received $3M in scholarships...

These stories are more common lately where a kid is praised for getting tons of money in scholarships. You expect them to say how the kid is going to Harvard or Princeton only to find out its Southern or UNC Asheville. If these kids are so smart why settle? Why brag about your accomplishments only to celebrate with a crappy school?
The latest is a kid from Georgia who got a 4.7 GPA and was valedictorian. Going to NC AT&T or some shite. I went from feeling good for him to feeling like maybe he had shitty counselors.

No one ever cares. I just laugh at high school grad parents getting all giddy over their 6.7 GPA, triple sport Prom king. He’s likely to end up the same place as the 3.0 kid going to community college for a few years while working.

It's not terribly surprising.
A kid who Harvard wouldn't give two shits about would be treated like royalty at your typical SEC school.
For example, UGA has something called Foundation Fellows which is their most prestigious scholarship program. It isn't just a free ride that pays for tuition and housing. It's virtually a blank check to do whatever you want while you're a student at UGA (whatever research you want, whatever study abroads you want to do, etc.) and UGA will pick up the entire tab.
Any of the students in that program could've gone to whatever university they wanted to. Apparently they just preferred to get the star treatment rather than just be another face in the crowd.
It's the same reason that 4 and 5 star recruits occasionally sign with mediocre football programs. They're promised playing time as a freshman, etc. etc.

It's a bunch of bullshite! They didn't actually get all those scholarships, they were OFFERED them. Its the same as if you are offered 3 jobs paying $100K, $120K and $150K. You are not making $370K.

YOu all don't care because you probably aren't footing a college tuition bill at the moment. Congrats to any kid that can get some cash to attend the school they end up going to. At least they won't be a burden with student loans they won't end up paying off.

We had needs like this when I was back in school. A few of us athletes tabbed up what our scholarships would’ve been worth and blanked them.

There is a trend among black high schools to get their best and brightest to apply to 100+ schools (most will waive app fees for low income) and get all the scholarships and then brag that they received millions in scholarships. There's no harm in it, and it makes them feel good, its just dishonest.
An ACT of 25 will get you up to $60,000 in scholarships to Grambling. That same ACT score willet you $2000-$3000 to LSU.
So you apply to every HBCU and you get $2 million easily.
It won't be long before this trend hits suburban white schools and the Southeasterns and Delta State's (which have similar scholarship matrixes as the HBCUs) are included. Ive actually seen a couple of instances of this in Mississippi. Not $3 million, but they hit that $1 million number and the school goes crazy in promoting it.
I consult high achieving students and their families on scholarships. I usually work with students trying to get into selective colleges and universities. But I could easily guarantee $100k in scholarship offers if you had a 23 ACT. I know what schools throw money at average kids.

I went to a rural LA high school graduation recently and by far the biggest scholarship was the kid who went to play FB at SELU
It was over $90k

Who cares? If it gets the kid a serviceable degree that gets them where they want to go in life, it's a win.

Ivy leagues and the like are more difficult to get into than you realize. I’ve posted this before, but one of the co-Valedictorians in my son’s class got a perfect score on her ACT TWICE and got rejected by MIT. Another co-Valedictorian with a 34 on the ACT got rejected by his top 4 choices.

Its nearly impossible for a Southern white person with means to get into the Northeastern elite schools. Its just the way it is.
I know of a student who was a National Merit finalist, Valedictorian, 1580 SAT, athlete, senior class president, AP everything, who got waitlisted at Princeton (although he did get into Columbia and Cornell). Princeton ended up having a spot for him, but he was originally denied.
The same year, there was a story of a homeless kid from Mississippi getting into Harvard. No where close to the credentials, but good story.

I saw that tweet by one of the Houston news stations. I didn't really understand why they mentioned it. It seemed like a pretty typical story that you see in every city this time of year. I guess part of the story was that he was black, but I would figure there would be quite a few high achieving black students in Houston that got a bunch of scholarship offers.

It annoys me too.
Join the military. I didn't pay a dime and still have education credits left for graduate school. I also made 2k/mo as a student.
And yes, its usually black females who draw the attention.

They’re just proud of how much scholarship money they were offered.

So now the OT hats kids and their educational accomplishments and they mean nothing because Joe message board says so.

One of my cousin's daughters (no pics) was "really smart" in HS. She was valedictorian, received a full scholarship to LSU.
After her 2nd semester she lost her scholarship, had below a 2.0 GPA.. Dropped out. But she did go to Nicholls the next fall and ended up graduating, but she had to get student loans to pay for it..

They dont want to compete. So they go to a small school and try to remain the Big Fish.

I don't know about this. I'm a class rep for my high school, so I am around the school a decent amount and see where the seniors go each year. There are always multiple white boys from wealthy families going to the Ivy Leagues every year.

In the examples I gave, the first is Asian, and the second is 1/2 black, 1/2 Asian with a sister at Yale.
