This video is pretty old, but they do this every day at the border crossing between the two. Both sides are well-attended and have bleachers and a stadium-like setup for spectators - it's pretty much a show of tradition.
I think things like this are cool and fascinating, and you're right that there's no way the guys on either side actually dislike each other. It's a huge honor to those chosen to represent either side and it's ceremonial in nature, they have fun with it and are local celebrities.
