The towers were not great architecture but they became iconic images of NYC. The new tower is really mundane but thats what you get with NYC politics. The original design for the building was much better.

They were not very ornate or interesting. But they were huge and twins. And that made them cool.

If you look at the architects othe buildings they are all flat, bland rectangles. I don’t subscribe to the idea that concrete is beautiful and should be showcased. I despise Brazilia for the same reason.

...because cost is a major factor when constructing these towers.

The more intricate the design, the more engineering considerations and additional costs needed.

Going back to my first post, these buildings were designed for utility, not pleasing to the skyline.

I approve of this thread and agree with you. Really ugly. Not a huge fan of the new tower either; the original design was awesome.

It’s not truthful to imply aesthetics doesn’t come into play when designing them. These aren’t soviet apartment blocks. If efficiency in cost was the sole driving factor there would be one blueprint featureless building and we’d build one after another after another.

You're just being difficult now.

There's a range for everything in life. The WTCs were designed the way average buildings looked at that time.

Why do I need to explain the basics of the world to you? Are you drunk?

The first time I saw them was on 9/11 and I wasn’t as impressed either but after growing up and seeing them in old films you appreciate the symbol they were. They wouldn’t have been any more memorable if they were flashy, it was that there were two that made them unique

The St. Louis Arch
The Golden Gate Bridge
Twin towers, you know it’s NY

It was not their form that was the strength of them, it was their size, imprint, and audacity. When I first moved to NYC I relegated them to the areas that tourists visited and the place that business people filed in and out of. After spending time meeting friends in Battery Park and numerous birthday parties cruising around them in the Frying Pan... the sight of them at night illuminated became a huge imprint emotionally. The freedom to be that one felt while you were looking at them. The possibilities. The building became a cypher for the city itself. Huge! there's two of them! How dare they!

I had an appointment at the passport office in their shadow at 9am on Sept 11th, 2001. I overslept and awoke to the news. It smelled like burnt plastic for months.

They were great.
