Fear of failure is exactly the reason for the fake. As for Russia not calling us out, who'd believe them? Certainly not a country, at the time, educated to hate Russians and communism. Remember the McCarthy era?
And, as 9/11, covid and other such grand conspiracies have shown, the world as a whole, enemies and friends, don't stray from the official narrative. The US is quite the bully so it makes good sense that Russia or anyone wouldn't pick a fight they couldn't win. Or we'd just throw money to make it go away. It's what we do.

We went to the moon. What did we find there? Not a damn thing. We spent billions of dollars to plant a flag nobody is ever going to see. The only thing we got out of it was the lessons learned and technologies advanced.

It’s really amazing how little folks understand how much more advanced our tech was back then versus other countries.
We took all the best scientist after WWII.

Its absurdly expensive to put that much weight onto the moon and bring it back. I believe the Apollo program on its own was more expensive than the Manhattan project, which doesn't include Gemini and all the other shite leading up to it.
There's no reason to go back right now. Once we have a means to build a real base there and launch for the stars, we'll be back.

The main reason we’re the only country to do it is:
1. It’s highly expensive and requires highly advanced engineering skills.
2. There really isn’t good return on your investment other than to say your country has been to the moon.
So, basically we’re the only country that could afford to go and it really isn’t worth it to go on the first place. That’s it. It’s as simple as that.
