I’m in Jefferson and recommend that.
The city thugs are occasionally coming out here now, so make sure you get off street parking wherever you rent.

Damn! That sucks. When did this happen to you?

Well, funerals are probably cheap there because of sales volumes.

Great news, and congratulations on being accepted. We need more people like you in New Orleans but we need you to stay. Try and live uptown and get off street parking if anyway possible. It will cost you more but it’s great insurance.
Embrace all that is still great about the city and do something about what’s not. Most of these people who post here are losers who DO NOTHING but complain. If there were fewer of them and more well educated people who gave a damn then we wouldn’t have the problems we have in New Orleans or any big city.
You obviously have talent so do something to make the city better before you leave or if you stay do something besides take and run.

There should be a Facebook group for your class with a pretty helpful handout on the pros/cons of certain parts of town as well as a bunch of people looking for roommates.
I lived in Metairie near the Causeway/Airline junction. I liked it. Easy to get to school, far enough away to avoid the hassle of being in the city, but easy enough to get downtown when I wanted to.
My now wife lived uptown on St Charles a block from Vincent’s. Also a great place. On Maple St there were a ton of little restaurants (if you folks have never been to the Ba Chi Canteen, you should try it) and bars and, more importantly, a PJ’s across the street from a Starbucks separated by a great bakery and down the street from another coffee shop. There’s a distinct possibility that you’ll be spending extended periods of time in a coffee shop studying, so this was nice. We could also walk to the Loyola library which we spent a lot of time studying in.
Once you get closer to Claiborne, you’ll want to plan on spending less time walking the little streets near your home- it can get a bit sketchy. A fair number of my classmates lived in The Georgian which was a pretty decent place in a cool area.

Check social media for other med students there. They might have some that are leaving for residency and are leaving behind cool/safe places to live. And also cheap furniture.

I love New Orleans but
It’s not in a good place. I’m completely serious when I say wear a fricking vest

Live in the Lakeview area if possible or in dorms or warehouse apartments. Your study hours on Campus will keep you out late. As you get to know the city you can move live with classmates etc.

I took Mycology From Joan McCamish, PhD in Grad school. Dr Mac said that if you worked the ER or clinic at Mercy Hospital (in those days) for one year, you would see every known fungal pathogen infection.
I'll ask you to believe me on this statement. There are some pretty gross fungal diseases out there.
