I just turned 41. Its been a rollerscoaster so far. But Im offshore and im watching the 60 year olds trying to hang on in this field and it isnt looking good for them. I do like my job and am pretty good at it. But like all professions, at the end of the day I am easily replaceable.
Im considering after I getting my 2 houses rented getting into something else that has better benefits, pay, growth and I can work into my late 60s.
What I am doing, I dont think it is possible and the growth isnt here with this company.
Good for you. On your decision.
An HVAC License doesnt sound too bad.

You should move into the dorms and request a roommate.

I went back to school to get a teaching certificate after 20 years as a life insurance broker. Took several classes and was generally the oldest person in the classroom. I eventually found out about Praxis and sending my college records. I passed the Praxis in history and social studies with ease (not that it’s difficult, lol).
I was the volunteer track coach at my kids high school where my ex-wife also taught. I caught the bug of coaching and teaching. I A coached for five years and taught for two. We ended up divorcing, and it just made the situation with both of us teaching there untenable. I gave up on that dream and decided not to sell my business. Went back to the office.
. .
Probably not exactly the type of story you wanted to hear but I did go back to school at 42 after getting a bachelors degree. I wish I was coaching right now at 60. One of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. So if you have a dream and want to make a change go for it, man. I regret not sticking it out.

My successful engineer nephew just got art degree at 54 and is now working on a masters. It can be done if prior success makes it financially feasible.

I was on the PhD committee for a chemistry major. After working for a few years in the aerospace field, she asked if I could advise her on getting an ME degree (my department). She was in her late 30's. I looked at her options and figured out that she could actually finish an MS in ME faster than a BS. I was her MS advisor and she knocked it out pretty easily. This will be generally true since graduate degree programs are much more flexible and individualized than undergrad and she didn't have to take statics, dynamics, mechanical design, etc. and could focus on thermal-fluid sciences topics, where she had a good background.
If your degrees are in the sciences, you might contact a graduate advisor at your intended university and ask about that. Good luck with it.

Finished bachelors last year at 43, MBA this year at 44. In the same boat as you. Make 200k a year but was stuck as an offshore baw. Should be able to move internally next year.

I’m 41 and I’m planning on going back to college to get my Bachelor degree in Business doing the online route. After high school, I did 2 years of college but I decided to leave school and join the military. I took a few online classes over the years but couldn’t stay consistent with it due to my schedule. For the most part, I should have enough credits to transfer to wherever I decide to go and have less than 2 years left.
I want to finish what I started and the education benefits from the military will pay for me to finish. I’m just trying to find a school to finish at. Anyone has any recommendations for a legit school that offers online degrees?

But I also don't think I could go back today because of how so much of it is online
Im the exact opposite .. like the OP, i am 46 and looking at returning to school.. for me, there’s no way id even consider it if i had to set foot back onto a campus.. in my situation it would literally be impossible (i currently live overseas)- but even if i was stateside, the fact that many schools offer online degrees is a huge plus to me .. i actually learned a new term recently- Asychronous.. i guess that’s when you can self-pace your online work, as opposed to Synchronous where you have to join online classes at certain times no matter what time zone you are in .. im guessing those terms arent new to Zillenials and the like, but for this Gen Xer it was new info .
