Palmetto saved my life and in a few months (God willing), I'll make 3 years sober. I've had to change a lot in my life and see the world a different way and react differently to things. I pray often. I watch bad habits because I know what they can lead to. There is a lot that goes into staying sober and until you realize that, it's hard to live a sober life.
I know this isnt your thread and isnt about you, but I am just now seeing this. As someone from your past that you just talked about I just wanted to say that this is freaking awesome to read and I'm proud of you man.

I was in treatment wondering how I was going to do this, when I didn’t believe in anything anymore and the counselor told me, just pray for the willingness to believe..
Sometime thereafter I came to the realization I never had to go thru that door again, as long as I did my part, stuck with the program, it was over.
That was in 1984,

Thanks, Godfather. Yeah, you knew me from early on and I was definitely hell on wheels when I drank. Thanks for saying you're proud, that really means a lot to me.

I was in that one for a bit. First 5, then 8, then 10.
Group therapy with Jerry in Cabin 10 every day...

. But for some of us, we just absolutely cannot stop once we start. Or, we'll stop for a period of time and then start again by having a drink with dinner. But then, we twist that in our brains to lie to ourselves that indeed we can drink like normal people. So then we have two drinks with dinner, than a drink before and a one after, then before long we're drinking every night again.
This is what happened to me. Just kept pushing it. Oh I can go out and have two beers. Months go by and those two turn into 10+ and I ended up in jail.

To Whit and others who have addiction problems and went to treatment.... Stay strong brother(s), live one day at a time, and Pray the Serenity Prayer often. I’ve been clean and sober since 12-27-87 and have never forgotten my past using days. I attended LSU for 3 semesters and partied like a rock star everyday. As a drug addict and alcoholic, you DGAF about anything. I’m thankful to be alive today and will support anyone who admits they are powerless and wants to change their lifestyle.

I was on drugs for years. Rehab did not help. I would go then be high weeks later.
Things got bad. Then one day I got in an incident where an associate of mine and I were too far.. I’m not going to give details it’s way too graphic for this forum, but I was knocked out unconscious with a concussion and needed stitches and I could have died.
That night, I realized that the lifestyle just wasn’t worth it. I didn’t wanna die and I had missed out on so much on life chasing something that didn’t give a damn about me hanging with people who didn’t care about me.
I got on my knees and prayed and surrendered to god for the first time really ever. I gave up the fight.
There is a saying it takes what it takes. I look back on that night man and what was I thinking I was just living in sin I was a shell of myself
