Also, Darth and Wafer must have been in a relationship at some point that didn't end well.
Been married for over 17 plus years. The relationship before that was my high school GF who swore she'd wait for me while I was away in the the Army. I got the Dear John letter just a few weeks after I got to Germany. That was 1988. Now that I think about it, it was about this time of year, right around Thanksgiving.

If you really don't want to marry her don't. She's going to go ape shite crazy on your arse, you should probably not do this in public.
My question is, you have already been with this chick for 10 years, obviously there was something there for both of you to want to be in a relationship for that long, would you have kept it going if you weren't getting married?

OP said they got engaged over a year ago and HE DID WANT TO MARRY HER THEN. He just changed his mind. Sucks for her, but it's what is best. Free will can be a bitch.
That's 9 years. That's well beyond my 5 years rule. Seriously, by year 2 if you're in your mid-20s, you should at least bring up the subject of marriage and kids even if you aren't even close to being ready for either.

I do agree that people look at marriage as if it's supposed to be some Danielle Steele novel. It's hard work.
You hit the nail on the head. One of the main reasons so many people divorce though is they either don't realize this or they do and just don't want to put in the effort.

How are y'all not living together???
Also, as discussed if you think you are breaking up with her tonight you're kidding yourself this is going to be a process.

So now you're dictating the rules of relationships? Don't you think having rigid rules for something so fluid, unpredictable, and natural is not only foolish, but problematic?

I haven't read this whole thread but it has taken you 10 years to figure out you don't want to marry her? Wow.

OP--With all the investment in this thread, you need to get back to us after your tete-a-tete is finished. Either that or tell us what paper your obit will appear in.
Buena suerte.

Those that have been critical of the OP, what would you propose he do - go forth and marry her?
Well, no use in crying over spilt milk at this point, so he's finally gotten his balls together after 10 fricking years and is doing the right thing, but it's long overdue and he may could have fricked up her life forever as a whole. They should by no means get married, but the OP should have had 3 years with her tops, realized that he doesn't want to marry her, and then broken up with her and wished her the best.

i think women have as much say in ending a relationship as men. i don't buy the "time" excuse as something to blame him for
